In May, Toyota unveiled the 2023 Highlander and discussed its brand-new 2.4-liter gasoline turbocharged engine. The old normally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 has 30 fewer horsepower but 46 more pound-feet of torque thanks to the turbo engine's 265 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Toyota still claims a combined-cycle fuel economy of 25 miles per gallon, according to EPA estimates. The 2.4-liter engine, which is standard in all grades, reduces NOx and NMOG emissions.
Customers can choose between the turbocharged four-cylinder and the Highlander Hybrid, which starts at $40,220. It is powered by a familiar 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, two motor generators, a small battery pack, and a rear-mounted electric motor. This gives the crossover all-wheel drive and a combined output of 243 horsepower. More importantly, the hybrid has an EPA-estimated combined fuel economy rating of 36 mpg.
Aside from the new engine, the model year change brings with it a slew of new features for the midsize SUV. When you step up to the Limited or Platinum trim levels, you'll get dual 12.3-inch screens as standard equipment.
The larger infotainment screen is an optional upgrade over the 8-inch display on the XLE and XSE trims. These lower trims retain the seven-inch gauge cluster that is now standard on the L and LE models.
The Highlander Limited and Platinum come standard with power-folding side mirrors. The wireless charging pad has also been relocated from the center console box to beneath the touchscreen.
Other changes are few, but Toyota listened to our concerns and relocated the wireless smartphone charger to a far more logical and accessible location. It was previously hidden beneath a roll-top cover on the center console, but it is now housed in a cubby beneath the infotainment system.
Apart from a new Cypress green color, there aren't many exterior alterations to note. The Highlander XSE also has brand-new 20-inch wheels with a black finish that are distinctive to the vehicle.
The Toyota 2023 Highlander will be available at dealers starting in November. The online configurator has been updated to reflect the modifications in the interim.
