The newly unveiled BMW X3 showcases a fresh platform and redesigned interior and exterior. A significant addition to this lineup is the iX3, an electric SUV set to launch next year, which was previewed by the Vision Neue Klasse X concept earlier this spring. This model marks BMW's first implementation of their next-generation architecture.

The iX3 will be available alongside the combustion engine version of the X3. The updated 2024 X3 model has undergone significant changes, including dropping the 'i' from its name, resulting in the xDrive 30i becoming the xDrive 30, and the M50 replacing the M40i. Additionally, the base two-wheel drive model has been discontinued.

Although the 2025 X3 maintains the same 2,865 mm wheelbase as its predecessor, its design elements draw inspiration from the smaller X1, which was introduced in 2022. The new model boasts slight increases in length, width, and height, enhancing its overall presence while retaining the classic front-engine, rear-drive proportions. One of the standout features is the large kidney grille, illuminated on the flagship M50 xDrive and optional on the base 30 xDrive. This grille, seen on other BMW models like the XM, now includes a controversial pattern of vertical and diagonal bars. Furthermore, the lower ride height, wider rear track, stiffer body structure, and various geometry adjustments aim to improve steering precision and stability.

Inside, the X3 benefits from a redesigned interior featuring BMW's curved dashboard display, which integrates the infotainment screen and gauge cluster. The new OS9 technology enables over-the-air updates and offers access to music and video streaming apps, news, augmented reality navigation, and in-car gaming, with a smartphone serving as the controller.

For those not enamored with the new grille design, the M50 model offers an alternative with horizontal bars. The M50 also comes with adaptive dampers, M Sport brakes, 20-inch M wheels, an M Sport rear differential, and quad exhaust tailpipes. The most compelling reason to opt for the M50, however, is its 3.0-liter inline-six engine, which, aided by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, delivers 393 hp and 580 Nm of torque, up from the previous M40i's 382 hp and 500 Nm. Despite these enhancements, BMW reports the same 4.4-second zero to 100 km/h time as the previous M40i. The more affordable xDrive 30 model also sees no improvement in this area, as its 2.0-liter inline-four engine, now with mild-hybrid technology, produces 255 hp and 400 Nm of torque, up from 248 hp and 350 Nm, but maintains the same 6.0-second sprint to 60 mph due to the 2025 model's increased weight. Looking forward, the X3 M variant may surpass its predecessor in performance, potentially benefiting from the same 20 hp boost recently applied to the M3 and M4 Competition xDrive, bringing its output to 523 hp.

Despite the updated dashboard and sharper exterior styling, the core of the 2025 X3 remains largely unchanged from the current popular model. The starting price reflects these updates, with the discontinuation of the rarely purchased $46,900 RWD sDrive base model resulting in a higher entry price. However, the $49,500 xDrive 30 model is only $600 more expensive than its predecessor. The M50, now priced at $64,100, sees a more significant increase of $2,220 over the M40i, yet it still remains competitively priced against rivals from Porsche and Mercedes.
