SAIC Volkswagen has unveiled the Teramont Pro in China, a vehicle that offers a compelling preview of the redesigned Atlas for markets beyond China. This new model presents a significant evolution in Volkswagen's seven-seat crossover segment, showcasing a blend of increased dimensions and advanced technological features.
The Teramont Pro's exterior design is characterized by a streamlined and modern aesthetic. A fully enclosed grille, flanked by substantial headlights, creates a cohesive front fascia. A sporty lower bumper, incorporating various air intakes, adds a touch of dynamism. Flowing body lines and flush-mounted door handles contribute to a sleek profile. A distinctive character line and an updated greenhouse further enhance the vehicle's visual appeal. At the rear, a spoiler and a light bar with pixel-like taillights create a contemporary look. The Teramont Pro's dimensions have been expanded, measuring 5,158 mm in length, 1,991 mm in width, and 1,788 mm in height. This represents a 61 mm increase in length compared to the current Atlas, with slight increases in width and height.
While Volkswagen has been relatively reserved in detailing the interior, available visuals reveal a digital instrument cluster, a floating infotainment system, and a dedicated front passenger display. The model can also be equipped with three additional screens, suggesting the availability of a rear-seat entertainment system. Notable interior features include a panoramic sunroof, a Harman Kardon audio system, and a 30-color ambient lighting system. A fragrance diffuser and a "queen" front passenger seat, featuring an electric footrest, massage, and ventilation functions, elevate the comfort and luxury. Rear climate controls and rear sunshades further enhance passenger convenience. A floating center console and an apparent wireless smartphone charger contribute to the modern and tech-focused interior.
Volkswagen has highlighted the Teramont Pro's advanced technological features, including DCC adaptive chassis control and the IQ. Pilot assisted driving system. The latter, described as an L2+ semi-autonomous driving system, provides enhanced driver assistance. The model also features a "parking butler system" for remote parking assist.
Powering the Teramont Pro is a fifth-generation EA888 engine, engineered for improved responsiveness, reduced fuel consumption, and lower emissions. This familiar powertrain has undergone extensive updates, including the adoption of the Miller cycle and a 500-bar ultra-high-pressure fuel system for finer fuel atomization. These enhancements improve combustion efficiency while minimizing emissions and engine noise. The model also incorporates a variable-geometry turbocharger and an exhaust purification device that utilizes high-temperature exhaust gases for efficient pollutant removal. These refinements have resulted in increased power output, with the engine now producing 268 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque, representing a significant increase compared to its predecessors. For reference, the US-spec Atlas utilizes a fourth-generation EA888 engine, producing 269 horsepower and 370 Nm of torque. The engine is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and a 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, enabling the crossover to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds. This new Teramont Pro demonstrates Volkswagen’s dedication to improving its vehicles through technological and design enhancements.
