The legendary AC Cobra, famous for its tradition of packing roaring V8 engines into its compact and lightweight frames, is set to undergo a significant transformation. In 2026, this iconic muscle car will also be available with a smaller, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. For enthusiasts who value the Cobra's legacy of high-displacement powerplants, this news may come as a shock, signaling a shift toward downsized engines in the automotive industry.

Although AC Cars has not revealed many specifics about the new engine, some key details have emerged. Two versions will be offered, with the more powerful variant producing an impressive 395 horsepower. This model will also feature an optional dual-clutch transmission (DCT), which is likely to have seven speeds. Achieving such high output from a small-displacement engine will undoubtedly require forced induction, most likely in the form of turbocharging. Supercharging remains a possibility, but the turbocharged configuration seems to be the more plausible choice.

To develop this new powertrain, AC Cars has partnered with a "global leader in hybrid and internal combustion powertrain solutions." According to the company, this collaboration ensures the engine will complement the performance capabilities of the Cobra's GT platform. Industry speculation suggests that the engine might be Volkswagen’s well-known EA888 turbocharged four-cylinder, commonly found in models like the Golf GTI and Golf R. Enthusiasts will be pleased to know that a six-speed manual transmission will also be available, preserving the classic driving experience that many associate with the Cobra.

The new four-cylinder engine, combined with forced induction, offers a different kind of driving experience—more modern and refined compared to the raw, unfiltered nature of the traditional V8.

To further enhance the performance of the four-cylinder Cobra models, AC Cars plans to integrate additional carbon fiber components. This move will help reduce the vehicle's overall weight, improving agility and responsiveness. Although pricing for this new variant has not been disclosed, the inclusion of advanced materials and cutting-edge engineering suggests it will remain a premium offering. As AC Cars adapts to changing market demands, the introduction of this smaller, more efficient engine marks a bold new chapter in the Cobra’s storied history.
