Acura Recalls TLX Sedans

Author: |

Honda has issued a recall for a limited number of TLX sedans due to a potential fuel system issue. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the weld connecting the fuel tank and filler neck may be incomplete, posing a potential safety risk.

Honda attributes this issue to a manufacturing error by the fuel tank assembly supplier, TI Fluid Systems. During production, the filler neck was improperly positioned and secured within the gripper fixture, resulting in uneven contact during the welding process. Furthermore, the welding equipment was incorrectly configured, leading to a shallow weld depth that may not adequately join the two components.

Honda first became aware of this potential issue in November 2023 when a warranty claim was filed. Subsequent investigations conducted jointly with TI Fluid Systems revealed two such instances. To address the issue, TI Fluid Systems implemented corrective measures. The melt depth for the welding equipment was adjusted on March 22, 2024, and improvements were made to the gripper fixture on March 29, 2024.

The recall encompasses TLX sedans manufactured between December 8, 2020, and November 10, 2023, covering the 2021 through 2023 model years. All affected vehicles were assembled at the Marysville Auto Plant in Ohio.

Honda will notify owners of the recall by mail no later than February 10, 2025. Dealerships will be responsible for replacing the suspect fuel tank assemblies with new units featuring a properly executed weld at the fuel tank and filler neck junction.

This recall highlights the importance of rigorous quality control measures throughout the vehicle manufacturing process. By promptly addressing this potential safety issue, Honda demonstrates its commitment to customer safety and vehicle reliability.
