Alpina, the renowned German performance tuner, is celebrating its 60th anniversary with the introduction of the exclusive B8 GT. Based on the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe, this limited-edition model, restricted to just 99 units, surpasses even the potent M8 in terms of power and performance.
The B8 GT boasts a distinct visual identity, featuring bespoke carbon fiber components such as a diffuser, air ducts, and dive planes. 21-inch forged wheels, crafted from solid aluminum, further enhance its exclusivity. Subtle yet significant details like B8 GT lettering on the door sills and B-pillars, and the option of discreet carbon metallic stripes, add to its unique character. Buyers can choose from seven exterior colors, with 20 of the 99 units featuring a striking bi-color finish combining either blue or green with black.
Powering the B8 GT is Alpina's most powerful engine ever: a 4.4-liter bi-turbo V8 that generates a staggering 634 horsepower, eclipsing the M8's 617 horsepower. The torque figures are even more impressive, with the B8 GT delivering 850 Nm of torque compared to the M8's 750 Nm. While the B8 GT may be marginally slower than the M8 in a straight-line sprint, reaching 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds, its top speed advantage is undeniable. The M8, even with the optional raised limiter, is electronically limited to 305 km/h, while the B8 GT can reach a breathtaking 330 km/h.
Alpina has refined the V8 with a new center silencer to enhance its already captivating sound. Additionally, a revised transfer case directs more power to the rear wheels, which are controlled by an electronically controlled differential with updated software.
The B8 GT offers an exclusive ownership experience with features like lavish Merino leather upholstery, two branded weekender bags, and a console plaque and cup-holder lid bearing the signature of Alpina founder Berkard Bovensiepen. However, the dated interior design of the 8 Series Gran Coupe, characterized by an old-style in-dash touchscreen, remains a minor drawback.
BMW's acquisition of Alpina in 2022, shortly before Bovensiepen's passing, will see the full integration of the brand from next year. This transition may make the B8 GT a highly sought-after collector's item, adding to its exclusivity and desirability. The future of Alpina under BMW's stewardship is eagerly anticipated, promising exciting developments for the legendary performance brand.
