Audi's New A5 and S5 Models Introduced A Shift in Design and Naming Conventions

Author: |

Audi has unveiled a fresh lineup of A5 and S5 models, equipped with an array of mildly electrified powertrains. This new series marks a departure from the previous two-door Coupe and Cabriolet models bearing the same name. Instead, the A5/S5 lineup is replacing the internal combustion engine (ICE)-powered A4/S4, now available in both Sedan and Avant body styles.

This strategic move simplifies Audi’s naming convention, where odd numbers are designated for gasoline-powered models and even numbers for electric vehicles. The new A5 Sedan, now featuring five doors including a versatile tailgate, effectively replaces the A5 Sportback and is offered alongside the A4 Sedan and Avant.

The performance versions of the A5 models are built on Audi's Premium Platform Combustion (PPC), an advanced iteration of the Volkswagen Group's MLB architecture. The new models have been extended by 2.6 inches, bringing the total length to 190.1 inches. The wheelbase has also been stretched by 3.1 inches to 114.1 inches, providing more legroom. In Europe, these cars will come with enhanced standard equipment, positioning them in the upper mid-size segment. Although precise dimensions for overall length and width haven't been disclosed yet, the extended wheelbase suggests a larger footprint.

In the United States, the regular A5/S5 models will be available, officially branded as the A5/S5 Sedan, despite featuring a practical five-door design with a tailgate. This model essentially replaces the previous A5/S5 Sportback. Notably, the traditional sedan, coupe, and convertible body styles, including the A5/S5/RS5 Coupe and Convertible, are no longer part of the lineup.

Inside the new A5, a modern and sleek interior awaits. Audi has eliminated the clutter of buttons, favoring a streamlined, sophisticated design that enhances the vehicle's premium feel. The centerpiece of the interior is a curved panoramic display, combining an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster with a 14.5-inch touchscreen for the Audi MMI infotainment system. An advanced head-up display and an optional 10.9-inch screen for the front passenger add to the luxurious experience. The new A5 also promises more cabin space for enhanced comfort.

While the A5 hasn’t yet transitioned to an all-electric platform, it starts with a reliable 2.0-liter turbocharged TFSI four-cylinder engine. This engine has been upgraded with a variable-geometry turbocharger (VTG) and an optimized combustion process for better efficiency. In Europe, this engine is available in two versions: a 148 hp variant for the front-wheel-drive model and a 201 hp variant for the quattro all-wheel-drive model.

Another option available in Europe and select markets is a revamped 2.0-liter TDI turbodiesel engine, featuring the new 48-Volt MHEV plus system. This diesel engine, equipped with a mild-hybrid system, produces 201 hp and 400 Nm of torque, with an additional 24 hp boost from the electric motor. This setup not only enhances acceleration but also improves fuel economy. The mild-hybrid TDI comes with a dual-clutch automatic transmission and can be paired with either front-wheel drive or Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive system.

The S5 model takes performance up a notch with an updated 3.0-liter V6 TFSI engine. This engine also benefits from the MHEV plus mild-hybrid system, delivering 362 hp, which is 13 hp more than the previous S4 and S5 models. This power is transmitted to all four wheels through an S tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission, with Audi’s quattro sport differential and torque vectoring enhancing cornering stability and confidence.
