In a commemorative celebration of its 50th anniversary, Autobacs takes center stage at the Tokyo Auto Salon by unveiling a distinctive lineup of five customized electric vehicles. Among the showcased models is a revitalized gem from the past - the ASL Garaiya electromod, reviving the spirit of the 2002 Tokyo Auto Salon where the original ASL Garaiya was introduced.

Originally slated for production in the fall of 2002, the ASL Garaiya project faced an untimely demise in 2005 after only a few prototypes were crafted. Nearly twenty years later, Autobacs resurrects this prototype, and the transformation is remarkable. The conventional Nissan-sourced 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine has made way for an electric powertrain, ushering in a new era for the Garaiya.

While specific details about the electric powertrain are somewhat scarce, the coupe now boasts an electric motor generating 168 hp and 280 Nm of torque. Although this is a slight reduction compared to the original engine's 201 hp output, the electromod proves its mettle with a brisk acceleration, clocking 0-100 km/h in 5.2 seconds, and reaching a top speed of 160 km/h.

Autobacs remains tight-lipped about certain aspects of the car, but the visuals speak volumes. Adorned in a clean white paint finish with striking blue accents, the Garaiya electromod exudes a modern yet nostalgic appeal. The customization extends to the 17-inch wheels enveloped in Bridgestone Potenza tires. Noteworthy features include an adjustable suspension, scissor doors adding a touch of flair, and a commanding rear wing amplifying the car's sporty demeanor.

Notably, this isn't the first foray into electrification for the Garaiya, as the Osaka Sangyo University Electric Vehicle Project had previously electrified a Garaiya variant. The earlier iteration featured an electric motor delivering 121 hp and 240 Nm of torque, showcasing the potential of electrifying this classic model. With Autobacs at the helm, the ASL Garaiya electromod stands as a testament to innovation, bridging the past and the future in the realm of electric performance.
