The BMW iX, the German automaker's flagship electric SUV, has received a significant refresh for the 2026 model year, addressing some of the criticisms leveled at the original model and further solidifying its position in the competitive luxury EV market.
While the initial iX, introduced in 2021, showcased BMW's ambition in the electric vehicle segment, it faced challenges in maintaining consumer interest. This mid-cycle refresh aims to reinvigorate the model with a series of enhancements, including subtle yet impactful design refinements, upgraded powertrains, and a focus on improved efficiency and range.
The 2026 iX retains its distinctive overall design while introducing subtle yet significant aesthetic refinements. The front grille now features a more refined internal diagonal treatment, aligning it with the design language of other recent BMW models like the X3. The M70 variant further distinguishes itself with a unique grille pattern, echoing the design cues of the high-performance M3 and M4. The front and rear aprons have been subtly revised, resulting in a cleaner, more streamlined appearance with less contrasting black plastic.
The M70 model further accentuates its sporty character with exclusive Shadowline headlights and taillights, which can also be optionally equipped on models with the M Sport or M Sport Professional packages. Further distinguishing the M70 are unique black mirror caps and exclusive alloy wheel designs. The iX now rides on standard 20-inch wheels, with optional upgrades to 21- and 22-inch wheels available with the M Sport packages. The M70, however, offers the option of 23-inch wheels for the first time, further enhancing its dynamic presence. All alloy wheels incorporate plastic inserts for improved aerodynamic efficiency.
The interior of the 2026 iX retains the familiar and intuitive BMW Curved Display and the user-friendly Operating System 8.5. However, the most significant interior upgrade is the introduction of the new M Multi-Function seats, which come standard on the top-of-the-line M70. These enhanced seats, available as an option on the xDrive45 and xDrive60 with the M Sport Package, offer exceptional comfort, support, and adjustability.
The 2026 iX also benefits from a more efficient heat pump system. This innovative technology utilizes waste heat from the drivetrain, battery, and surrounding air to effectively warm the cabin, enhancing efficiency and reducing energy consumption. Furthermore, the heat pump can also be used to warm the iX's battery and drivetrain components, further optimizing range and efficiency in colder climates.
The 2026 iX introduces a refined model hierarchy. The xDrive50 and M60 designations have been replaced with xDrive60 and M70, respectively, reflecting the increased power output of these models.
The xDrive60 now delivers a robust 536 horsepower, a significant increase over the previous xDrive50's 516 horsepower. The range-topping M70 boasts an impressive 650 horsepower, a 40 horsepower increase compared to the outgoing M60. These power enhancements translate to exhilarating performance figures: the xDrive60 accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, achieving a top speed of 124 mph. The M70 delivers even more impressive performance, accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 3.6 seconds and reaching a top speed of 155 mph.
Crucially, the 2026 iX also offers significant range improvements. The xDrive60 boasts an estimated EPA-rated range of 340 miles, representing an increase of approximately 29 miles compared to its predecessor. The M70 also experiences a range boost, with an estimated EPA-rated range of 299 miles, an improvement of 15 miles over the previous M60.
The 2026 iX welcomes a new entry-level variant, the xDrive45. This model offers a compelling balance of performance and efficiency, delivering 402 horsepower and an impressive EPA-rated range of 310 miles. While the xDrive45 utilizes a slightly less potent rear motor, it retains all-wheel drive capability and delivers a 0-60 mph sprint time of 4.9 seconds. The introduction of the xDrive45 significantly lowers the entry point for the iX, with a starting MSRP of $75,150 (excluding destination and handling fees), making it more accessible to a wider range of customers.
The xDrive60 will start at $88,500, a slight increase of $1,250 compared to the previous xDrive50. The M70 retains its starting MSRP of $111,500. All prices exclude the $1,175 destination and handling fee. Production of the 2026 iX is set to commence at BMW's Dingolfing plant in Germany in March 2025, with customer deliveries expected to begin in the second quarter of the year.
The 2026 BMW iX, with its refined design, enhanced performance, improved efficiency, and expanded model range, represents a significant step forward for the German automaker's flagship electric SUV, solidifying its position as a leading contender in the rapidly evolving luxury EV market.
