BMW Recalls i4 Models Due to Chassis Issue

Author: |

A significant number of BMW i4 electric vehicles have been recalled in the United States due to a defect in their chassis. This is the second recall for the i4 model in recent months, following a previous recall related to battery issues.

The latest recall involves approximately 1,150 i4 models that were shipped and delivered to the U.S. market. BMW has determined that the left-side longitudinal beam of the chassis in these vehicles may not have been manufactured according to specifications. This could lead to cracks developing near a rivet flange that supports the rear wheel arch.

If the chassis beam were to crack, it could compromise the structural integrity of the vehicle. In the event of a crash, excessive deformation could occur around the second row of seats and the high-voltage battery, increasing the risk of injuries and even a fire.

The recall affects 2024 BMW i4 eDrive40, i4 xDrive40, and i4 M50 models that were produced between March 7 and April 25 of this year. BMW initially identified and repaired all affected vehicles before they were distributed to dealerships. However, it was later discovered that some additional i4s had been built outside of the original suspect range and also contained the same defect.

Despite the issue, there have been no reports of warranty claims, customer complaints, or field reports related to the faulty chassis beams. BMW is also unaware of any accidents or injuries that have occurred as a result of the defect.

Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by mail by October 7, 2024. They will be instructed to take their i4 to a local BMW dealership for inspection and, if necessary, replacement of the left-side longitudinal beam. The duration of any necessary repairs has not been disclosed at this time.

This recall highlights the importance of ongoing quality control and safety measures in the automotive industry, even for relatively new and technologically advanced vehicles like the BMW i4. As more electric vehicles enter the market, it is essential that manufacturers maintain high standards to ensure the safety and reliability of these vehicles for consumers.
