BMW has unveiled the all-new 2025 2-Series Gran Coupe, marking a departure from the brand's recent polarizing designs. While the new model may not be for everyone, it offers a range of improvements, including increased power, advanced technology, and more standard features.

BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe

Although the 2025 2-Series Gran Coupe is considered a "new" model, it's actually a heavily revised version of its predecessor, similar to the European-bound 1-Series hatchback. While the underpinnings remain largely unchanged, the 2025 model features larger dimensions, a redesigned interior, a standard dual-clutch transmission, and a focus on BMW M-performance parts.

All 2025 2-Series Gran Coupes sold in the US will feature M Tech styling as standard, including more aggressive front and rear bumpers. The M235 variant can be identified by its quad tailpipes. A variety of colors are available, including two "BMW Individual" frozen finishes, and some colors can be paired with a contrasting black roof.

While M Sport styling is now standard, BMW offers an optional "M Sport Package" for those seeking even more customization. This package includes M Shadowline Lights, a rear spoiler, and extended Shadowline trim. Eighteen-inch alloy wheels come standard, with larger 19-inch wheels and various tire options available as upgrades.

The 2025 2-Series Gran Coupe has grown slightly in size compared to its predecessor. The wheelbase and width remain the same, but the overall length has increased by 0.7 inches and the height by one inch.

BMW has enhanced the base 228 model with a range of new technologies. These include a 12-speaker Harmon/Kardon premium sound system, cloud-based live navigation, keyless entry, wireless device charging, and auto-dimming mirrors. Additionally, all variants of the 2025 2-Series Gran Coupe can be unlocked using an Apple or Android phone or Apple Watch. The new BMW Curved Display, featuring a 10.25-inch screen for the driver and a 10.7-inch panel connected to it, runs on iDrive 9 with QuickSelect and can be updated over the air.

The base 228 model now offers a slightly more powerful engine, producing 241 horsepower compared to the previous 228 horsepower. It will be available in both xDrive all-wheel drive and sDrive front-wheel drive configurations. For those seeking even more performance, the M235 xDrive model features a 312 horsepower engine. Both the 228 and M235 offer identical torque figures, with peak torque of 400 Nm available between 2,000 and 4,500 rpm.

The 2025 BMW 228 and M235 models share the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine, codenamed B48A20O2. This engine is a refined version of a familiar BMW powerplant, featuring a revised combustion system, direct and port injection, and a Miller combustion cycle. It is also used in the 2025 Mini John Cooper Works Countryman.

Another significant change for the 2025 2-Series Gran Coupe is the introduction of a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, replacing the previous eight-speed torque converter automatic. The new transmission promises faster shifts, and M Sport-equipped vehicles benefit from a "Sport Boost" function that optimizes powertrain and chassis settings for maximum performance.

The 2025 BMW 228 Gran Coupe xDrive can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, while the M235 xDrive can achieve the same in 4.7 seconds. Both models have a top speed of 130 mph, or 155 mph with performance tires.

Adaptive M Suspension is now standard across the range, providing a sporty driving experience. For those who prefer a more comfortable ride, conventional suspension is available at no additional cost.

The 2025 BMW 228i xDrive will be available in March 2025 with a starting price of $41,600 plus a destination and handling fee. The M235i xDrive Gran Coupe will also be available in March, starting at $49,500. Prices for both models are slightly higher compared to their predecessors.
