The latest version of the Volkswagen Passat in Europe may be available exclusively as a Variant (wagon), but in China, the demand for a traditional sedan remains strong. Consequently, Volkswagen has introduced the Passat Pro at the Chengdu Motor Show, a model that stands out with its elongated wheelbase compared to the European Passat Variant. The Passat Pro also features a more streamlined shape and a range of high-end features in its interior, tailored to meet the preferences of Chinese consumers.
This new model is the result of a collaboration between SAIC and Volkswagen, adding another option to the market that already includes the similarly-sized Magotan, produced by the FAW-Volkswagen joint venture. While the Passat Pro shares some design elements with the European estate, particularly at the front, it distinguishes itself with unique side bodywork and a completely redesigned rear end. This attention to detail in its exterior design helps the Passat Pro cater to those looking for a sophisticated and modern sedan.
Under the hood, the Passat Pro is built on the MQB platform and is equipped with a 2.0-liter TSI turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine. This engine delivers a respectable 217 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque. The power is directed exclusively to the front wheels via a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission. According to documentation from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, there will also be an entry-level model equipped with a 1.5 TSI engine, which produces 158 horsepower. Notably, unlike its European counterparts, the Passat Pro does not offer mild-hybrid or plug-in hybrid options, and there has been no indication of any upcoming electrified variants.
The Passat Pro comes in two trim levels: the Pioneer Edition and the Starry Sky Edition. For those seeking a sportier appearance, the optional Black Warrior kit is available. It is interesting to note that there is no mention of an R-Line variant, which suggests that Volkswagen employs a different branding strategy in the Chinese market.
The dimensions of the Passat Pro are quite generous, with a length of 5,006 mm, a width of 1,850 mm, and a height of 1,489 mm. The wheelbase measures 2,871 mm, making the car 89 mm longer than the European Passat Variant and offering an additional 30 mm between the axles. For comparison, the Magotan, another model popular in China, has the same wheelbase but is 16 mm shorter in overall length.
Inside the cabin, the Passat Pro is designed to impress with a high-tech digital cockpit that includes a 10.3-inch instrument cluster, a large 15-inch infotainment touchscreen, and an 11.6-inch display for the front passenger. Adding to the vehicle's technological appeal, Volkswagen has included an augmented-reality head-up display, a premium 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, and advanced driver assistance systems developed in collaboration with DJI, a company known for its expertise in drone technology.
Comfort and luxury are also key features of the Passat Pro's interior. The seats, described as "cloud-feeling," are equipped with extra foam for enhanced comfort and come with electric adjustment, ventilation, heating, and massage functions for both the front and rear passengers. To enhance the ambiance further, the car offers 30-color ambient lighting and an in-car fragrance system, aiming to provide a pleasant and customizable atmosphere for all occupants.
Volkswagen has already begun accepting pre-orders for the Passat Pro in China, although the official pricing details will be disclosed at a later date. Interestingly, the current version of the Chinese-spec Passat, which debuted in 2019 and received a facelift in 2022, will continue to be available alongside the new Passat Pro. This strategy allows Volkswagen to cater to a broader range of customers with varying preferences. In summary, the Passat Pro is set to be a competitive addition to Volkswagen’s lineup in China, appealing to those who desire a blend of traditional sedan comfort with modern technological enhancements.
