Daihatsu Rocky Crossfield: A Beach Bum's Best Guess at Off-Road

Author: |

Daihatsu has taken its trusty Rocky, a car that's been around for a few years now, and given it a makeover. The result is the Rocky Crossfield, a concept car unveiled at the 2024 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show. It's like slapping a pair of hiking boots on your grandma's slippers and calling it a mountain-climbing outfit.

The Crossfield tries to channel the spirit of the Toyota RAV4 Adventure, with its rugged, plastic-clad look. There's a chunky grille cover, black bits around the wheel arches, and some stickers to let everyone know it's something special. But let's be honest, it's more of a costume than a serious off-roader.

Under the hood, the Crossfield is powered by the same tiny 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine producing a paltry 85 horsepower and 105 Newton-meters of torque. It's like trying to climb Mount Everest with a bicycle. You'd think they'd at least give it the turbocharged engine for a bit of extra oomph, but nope. And to make matters worse, it's stuck with a CVT gearbox. It's like giving a snail a jetpack and then tying its feet together.

The Crossfield tries to look tough with its black wheels and all-terrain tires, but it's all for show. It's like a Chihuahua wearing a pit bull costume. And those halogen headlights, Daihatsu, even budget cars have LEDs these days.

On the plus side, it does look kind of cool in that sandy color. And the roof rack is a nice touch, even if it's more likely to carry surfboards than camping gear. But let's be real, this is a concept car that's more about looks than substance. It's like a fashion model who can't walk.

Daihatsu has already played around with the Crossfield idea a few years ago, but that version was a bit more serious. This one is just trying to catch some waves. It's like a wannabe adventurer who's more interested in taking selfies than actually going on adventures.
