China's automotive landscape welcomes the Deepal G318, a robust SUV born from the off-road spirit, intriguingly named after the highway connecting Sichuan province to Tibet, known as the G318. This off-road-centric concept is a creation of Changan's subsidiary, Deepal, established in 2022, introducing an aesthetically appealing, boxy design with anticipated pricing around $42,200 for the production model.
Sized similarly to the extended-wheelbase Volkswagen Tiguan, with a length of 4,750 mm, the G318 features a unique twist under the hood. Sporting a 1.5-liter engine, it serves as a generator, charging the batteries instead of directly propelling the wheels. The model is expected to offer two battery options, 18.4 kWh and 35.1 kWh, with specific driving ranges yet to be disclosed. Propelled by two motors powering all four wheels, individual motor ratings stand at 47 hp and 80 hp, ensuring a practical rather than exhilarating driving experience.
The G318 exhibits an attractive design with C-shaped DRLs, off-road lights, and distinctive front and rear bumper elements resembling underbody protection. Despite potential body-on-frame construction, suggesting off-road comfort, the SUV's name draws inspiration from a highway, specifically the Chinese national highway 318, a popular route connecting Sichuan to Tibet.
While poised to be a capable off-roader, Deepal envisions the G318 as an ideal tow vehicle, even showcasing tank turn capabilities for added flair. Positioned to compete with models like the GWM Tank and BYD FangchenBao, the production version aims to capture the attention of road trippers seeking a blend of rugged performance and towing prowess in the emerging electric SUV market.
