Exploring Design Features and Evolution of the New Honda Freed

Honda has unveiled the latest iteration of the Freed minivan in anticipation of its upcoming debut in the Japanese market, set for June 2024. This third-generation model takes design cues from the larger Step WGN and is offered in two variants: the standard Air and the rugged Crosstar, with a choice between gasoline and self-charging hybrid (e:HEV) powertrains.

The updated Honda Freed boasts a refreshed appearance, characterized by horizontal lines along its profile, a larger greenhouse, and a clean, uncluttered design for both the front and rear sections. The Freed Crosstar, in particular, incorporates SUV-inspired elements such as a distinct grille, robust bumpers, aluminum-style accents, roof rails, plastic fender extensions, and unique alloy wheels.

Measuring 4,310 mm in length, 1,695 mm in width, and 1,755 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,740 mm, the new generation sees a 45 mm increase in length compared to its predecessor, while maintaining the same wheelbase.

Positioned between the smaller Fit hatchback and the slightly larger Vezel SUV in Honda's Japanese lineup, the Freed occupies a unique niche. It's worth noting that all three models are built on variations of the same platform.

Inside, the cabin features a familiar six-seater layout with a flip-up third row that has been enhanced for lighter and easier operation. The Freed Crosstar is also available as a more conventional five-seater configuration, prioritizing cargo space. Both variants offer seat upholstery that is resistant to stains and scratches, ideal for family use or hobbies.

The redesigned cockpit showcases a larger standalone infotainment display and a smaller digital instrument cluster positioned closer to the driver. In terms of practicality, Honda has expanded the tray on the dashboard and added roof-mounted climate vents for rear passengers.

2024 Honda Freed

As with its predecessor, the new Honda Freed is offered in both gasoline and hybrid versions, available in both 2WD and 4WD options. While Honda has not provided specific details, the new e:HEV system is expected to combine a 1.5-liter engine with dual electric motors, promising improved performance and efficiency compared to the outgoing model.

Conversely, the base model Freed will feature a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine paired with a CVT gearbox.
