Mini is preparing to launch its new John Cooper Works (JCW) lineup this fall, but China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has already released images and technical details of the electric variant before its official debut. In typical fashion, MIIT has published these details ahead of schedule, giving the public an early look at the upcoming electric JCW model. Mini JCW EV

The production version of the electric JCW, which was first previewed by the John Cooper Works E PROtotype, showcases a design that stays true to Mini's iconic style. One of the standout features is the fully enclosed grille, adorned with the signature JCW logo and a checkered flag motif. The front end also boasts a sporty central intake, along with what appear to be vertical air curtains, enhancing the vehicle's aggressive and aerodynamic look.

As we move further along the body, the sporty aesthetics continue with prominent side skirts and 18-inch wheels that are aerodynamically optimized for better performance. The rear of the vehicle carries over much of the design seen in previous models, but the JCW variant distinguishes itself with a unique bumper that features a painted diffuser. In addition, there are taller reflectors, and the vehicle prominently displays three JCW badges, further emphasizing its sporty identity.

The liftgate of the electric JCW variant has a distinctive checkered flag pattern, although this is likely an optional feature. Other visual enhancements, such as hood stripes, contrasting mirror caps, a panoramic sunroof, and a multitone roof, can also be expected, giving buyers a range of customization options.

While the MIIT's listing didn’t provide in-depth performance specifications, it did confirm that the JCW Electric will be equipped with a lithium-ion battery and an electric motor capable of producing 255 horsepower. This is a significant increase in power compared to other models in Mini’s electric lineup. For comparison, the Cooper E offers 181 horsepower, while the Cooper SE delivers 215 horsepower.

With this added power, the JCW Electric, which weighs around 1,670 kg, will be able to reach a top speed of 200 km/h, making it notably faster than the UK-spec Cooper SE. Given the similar weight, it is possible that the JCW Electric will feature a 49.2 kWh battery pack, which is the same as that found in the Cooper SE. This battery provides a WLTP range of up to 401 km, although it is expected that the performance-oriented nature of the JCW will reduce that figure.

In summary, the new electric JCW variant is shaping up to be a powerful and sporty addition to Mini’s lineup, combining classic design elements with enhanced performance. While the official launch is still a few months away, the early release of images and specifications offers a tantalizing glimpse of what’s to come. The electric JCW promises to be a thrilling option for fans of the brand, especially those looking for an environmentally friendly, high-performance vehicle.
