Ford Weather Test Its New Cars Under Harsh Situation

Ford's Weather Factory in Cologne, Germany, is responsible for testing automobiles in harsh circumstances under one roof. While real-world testing is always preferred, the Weather Factory allows Ford engineers to test vehicles without the constraints of travel and other external elements that may interfere with the testing.

The Ford Weather Factory in Cologne guarantees that Ford cars remain dependable in a variety of weather situations.

The Blue Oval has recruited two robot test drivers dubbed "Shelby" and "Miles" to assist with the testing and argues that the testing has grown too realistic, which is too much for even the most experienced human test drivers.

These two robot test drivers, named after two of Ford's most recognized names in racing history, seek to replace human drivers in harsh weather testing, reducing the need for various safety measures.

Shelby and Miles are capable of operating in temperatures ranging from -40°C to 80°C, as well as at high elevations. They may also be configured to accommodate different driving styles, with "arms" and "legs" controlling the pedals, gear shifter, and even the push start/stop button.

Ford stated that it is continuing to undertake real-world testing in European and global locales, including the Grossglockner mountain in Austria and the icy Arjeplog region in Sweden.

Frank Seelig, supervisor, Wind Tunnel Testing, Ford of Europe mentioned that:

"These two new drivers are fantastic additions to the team, as they can take on the challenging endurance tests at high altitudes and in hot temperatures. Once the robot is in the driver’s seat, we can run tests through the night without ever having to worry that the driver will need a sandwich or a bathroom break."
