GWM Unveils Tank 500 Hi4-Z

The GWM Tank 500 Hi4-Z has officially launched in China. This plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model, priced at 363,800 yuan ($49,850), significantly undercuts the previously announced pre-sale price by over 10,000 yuan ($1,400).

While sharing the same exterior design as the existing Hi4-T model, the Hi4-Z boasts a distinct technological advantage. It introduces a novel decoupled 4-wheel drive system and a larger battery pack, enhancing its off-road capabilities and all-electric range.

Unlike the Hi4-T, which positions the battery under the trunk floor, limiting its size and cargo space, the Hi4-Z strategically places the 59.05 kWh battery pack between the front and rear axles within the chassis. This innovative placement not only maximizes battery capacity but also provides a substantial 201 km of WLTC-rated all-electric range, sufficient for most weekly commutes.

The decoupled 4-wheel drive system, a first for Great Wall, offers superior off-road performance compared to conventional PHEV systems. By decoupling the drivetrain, the Hi4-Z optimizes power distribution and enhances traction, particularly in challenging off-road conditions. The multi-link integral axle rear suspension further contributes to exceptional off-road capability, allowing for greater suspension travel and improved articulation over rough terrain.

Powering the Hi4-Z is a potent combination of a 2.0T E20NB Miller cycle engine and two high-performance electric motors. This setup delivers a combined system output of 635 kW and a staggering 1195 Nm of peak torque, propelling the vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 4.6 seconds. Even in "feed" mode, the vehicle can achieve a 5-second acceleration time.

Fuel efficiency is also impressive, with a claimed consumption of 8.6 L/100km. The high-capacity battery supports 163 kW fast charging, significantly faster than other PHEV off-roaders. This allows for a 30% to 80% charge in just 15 minutes, thanks to a discharge power of 600 kW.

Inside, the Hi4-Z maintains the luxurious interior of the Hi4-T, featuring a 12.3-inch LCD instrument display, a 14.6-inch infotainment screen, a streaming rear-view mirror, a head-up display, and a three-spoke steering wheel. The cabin is adorned with premium materials like Nappa leather, and both front and rear seats are equipped with heating, ventilation, and massage functions.

The Tank 500 Hi4-Z is available in four striking colors, including black, gray, white, and a unique two-tone option that transitions from white at the front to red at the rear.

With its impressive off-road capabilities, cutting-edge technology, and luxurious interior, the GWM Tank 500 Hi4-Z is poised to set new standards in the premium PHEV off-road segment.
