Ineos is recalling over 7,000 vehicles in the United States due to a potential safety issue with the door latch mechanism, which could cause the doors to open while the vehicle is in motion. This defect poses a serious risk to the safety of passengers and other road users. As a result, affected vehicles will need to be returned to authorized dealers for repairs.
The problem affects the 2024 Grenadier models, specifically the door button mechanism. In these vehicles, the exterior door buttons may not have been properly lubricated during assembly. As a result, the door buttons might stay in a depressed position, preventing the door from fully latching. If the door fails to latch properly, it can unexpectedly swing open while driving, creating a dangerous situation.
The vehicles involved in this recall were manufactured between July 6, 2023, and April 19, 2024. Owners who are affected by the issue may notice that the exterior door buttons get stuck in a pressed-in position. They may also hear an unusual sound when closing the door, indicating that it is not fully engaging with the striker. Additionally, a warning light will appear on the dashboard to alert the driver that a door is not securely closed.
Ineos first became aware of the problem in October 2023, following multiple warranty claims regarding the malfunctioning exterior door buttons. These reports indicated that the buttons were sticking, preventing the doors from properly latching when opened from the outside. In response, Ineos began reworking affected vehicles at their facility. In February 2024, the company issued a technical service bulletin to dealers, advising them to re-lubricate the door mechanisms to resolve the issue. However, despite these efforts, two incidents were reported in the United States where doors unexpectedly opened while the vehicles were being driven. These incidents prompted Ineos to classify the defect as a safety-related issue.
To address the problem, Ineos will notify owners of the recall starting March 31, 2025. Dealers have been instructed to replace all faulty door button assemblies free of charge. The new assemblies will feature improved guidance and kinematic mechanisms, as well as a more effective lubrication process to prevent the buttons from sticking. This recall is part of Ineos's ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety and reliability of their vehicles.
