In response to a surge in vehicle thefts fueled by social media-driven crime sprees, Kia has unveiled a groundbreaking theft deterrent ignition cylinder protector. This new component, designed specifically for vehicles that were ineligible for last year's software security update, aims to fortify the ignition cylinder body and thwart any attempts at removal, ultimately preventing vehicle theft.
This innovative theft deterrent is available for installation on several Kia models, including the 2011-2016 Forte, 2011-2021 Rio, 2014 Sedona, 2011-2016 Sportage, and 2010-2022 Soul. To enhance accessibility, Kia is offering the device free of charge, and owners can easily confirm their eligibility by visiting a dedicated website and entering their vehicle identification number (VIN).
Upon confirmation of eligibility, Kia will proactively reach out to owners, instructing them to visit their nearest dealership for installation. While details about the installation process are scant, the company has assured that once the ignition cylinder protector is in place, window decals will be affixed to notify potential thieves that the vehicle is equipped with enhanced theft protection.
The initiative is a direct response to the increasing number of vehicle thefts, particularly those highlighted on social media, exposing vulnerabilities in the security systems of various Hyundai and Kia models. Kia emphasizes its commitment to vehicle security, citing the installation of anti-theft software on nearly a million vehicles last year and the distribution of over 325,000 steering wheel locks. However, for owners who have fallen victim to multiple vehicle thefts, these statistics provide little solace.
Greg Silvestri, from Kia America, underlined the company's dedication to vehicle security, stating, "Vehicle security is a top priority for Kia, and we continue to take action to support our customers by helping to protect their vehicles from thefts, which have been encouraged by content spread across social media." He added that reinforcing the ignition cylinder body represents the latest step in guarding against evolving theft methods. Silvestri strongly encourages owners of vehicles without engine immobilizers, and those unable to receive the security software upgrade, to take advantage of this free security measure.
This move by Kia mirrors a similar effort by Hyundai, which has introduced an ignition cylinder protector for select models, including the 2011-2017 Accent, 2013-2014 Elantra Coupe, 2011-2012 Elantra Touring, 2011-2012 Genesis Coupe, 2011-2012 Santa Fe, and 2011-2012 Veracruz. Both automakers are taking proactive steps to address the rising threat of vehicle theft and to provide enhanced security measures for their customers.
