Mazda's Best-Selling CX-5 to Receive Next-Generation Upgrade

In the previous fiscal year, Mazda's CX-5 emerged as the top-selling model in North America, boasting an impressive sales figure of 153,808 units. This accomplishment is particularly noteworthy considering the CX-5's aging status, having been introduced to the market in 2017. However, Mazda has officially announced the development of a new generation for this beloved compact crossover, as disclosed in a discreet mention within the company's financial report for the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2024.

Among the sparse details provided by Mazda regarding the upcoming third-generation CX-5, one key aspect stands out: the adoption of an in-house developed hybrid powertrain. While Mazda has confirmed the integration of hybrid technology, specifics regarding whether it will feature a self-charging mechanism or plug-in capabilities remain undisclosed. Notably, Mazda has previously collaborated with Toyota to leverage hybrid expertise, evident in models such as the CX-50 in China, which shares electrified components with the Toyota RAV4. Additionally, Mazda has outlined plans for introducing a hybrid version of the CX-50 to other markets later in 2024.

Speculation had arisen following the introduction of the CX-50 in 2022, prompting questions about the potential retirement of the CX-5. However, Mazda has clarified that both models will coexist harmoniously, a decision substantiated by the CX-5's significantly higher sales volume in North America compared to the CX-50 in the previous year.

Despite the assurance of coexistence, observations arise regarding the growing density within Mazda's SUV lineup. This observation is accentuated by the recent additions of the CX-70 and CX-90, which share a new rear-wheel-drive platform and feature larger inline-six engines.

While the focus remains on SUVs, Mazda has also hinted at its foray into the electric vehicle (EV) market. Although the alluring electric Mazda6 is mentioned in the company's documentation, its availability is restricted to the Chinese market, where it will be accompanied by a plug-in hybrid variant.

Looking ahead, Mazda has outlined ambitious plans for its EV strategy, with the promise of unveiling its first dedicated EV platform in 2027, followed by a comprehensive launch of EV models spanning from 2028 to 2030. These initiatives reflect Mazda's commitment to innovation and sustainability in the evolving automotive landscape.
