The Mercedes SL, which debuted late last year, will share its underpinnings with the AMG GT Coupe, a fixed-roof model. Mercedes is still working on the new model, but a new spy film shows it testing near the Nurburgring.
Although the film does not show the car on the legendary course, it does capture its throaty exhaust tone. If earlier spy images are right, Mercedes is working on at least two coupe variants, most likely the GT 53 or 55 and the GT 63. The model in this new video is the more powerful of the two, sporting AMG's trademark quad exhaust tips.
In the Mercedes lineup, the new AMG will be the sportier alternative next to the comfort-focused SL. In order to reduce weight, the emphasis on sportiness may preserve the two-door rear-wheel drive.
The new SL is powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8, which comes in two outputs. The base SL 55 produces 469 hp and 700 Nm of torque, while the sportier SL 65 produces 577 hp and 800 Nm of torque. Mercedes also equipped the SL with an all-wheel drive and a 4Matic nameplate.
The coupe's design remains completely camouflaged, but it does appear to be sleeker than the car it will replace. The muscular front bumper and larger intakes are likely hidden beneath the cladding are obscured. The narrow taillights may be seen through the coverings at the back, which is well-camouflaged.
Mercedes is expected to debut the AMG GT Coupe this year, although no date has been set. Mercedes is building an SL model, thus a plug-in hybrid version is possible.
