Mercedes-Benz is marking the 45th anniversary of its iconic G-Class by introducing two bold new creations: a one-off concept vehicle, the "Project G-Class Past II Future," and a limited-edition production model of the G-Class. Both are designed to blend retro appeal with avant-garde elements, and their distinctive designs are sure to spark diverse opinions among car enthusiasts. In collaboration with luxury fashion brand Moncler, Mercedes aims to make these models unique homages to the G-Class legacy while pushing creative boundaries.
The Project G-Class Past II Future is a one-of-a-kind concept car based on a 1990s convertible G-Class. This vehicle was modified by designer NIGO and presents a two-tone matte finish in grey and olive green, punctuated by black and gold accents. Perhaps the most eye-catching feature is its soft top, which draws inspiration from Moncler’s famous puffer jackets. This padded roof contrasts sharply with the G-Class’s traditionally rugged look, giving the vehicle a surreal, avant-garde style that is bound to be polarizing. The concept model also sports a golden fuel canister, a flashy addition that’s anything but typical for off-road vehicles, alongside a custom-built sound system that includes boom boxes mounted on the roof’s linkages. The concept’s interior takes on a similar vibe, featuring retro-inspired fabric seats, black steel wheels, and other details that highlight the vehicle’s throwback aesthetic.
In contrast to the concept, the special edition G-Class is a more subdued but still distinctive celebration of the G-Class heritage, blending elements of the original design with contemporary flair. This limited edition shares the green and grey exterior with black accents seen on the concept vehicle, along with unique “Past II Future” badging and a specially designed spare tire cover. Inside, Mercedes has added subtle retro touches, including unique upholstery and branding, with lettering that identifies each unit as "One of 20," a nod to its exclusivity. Only 20 units of this edition will be produced, with deliveries scheduled for April 2025. The special edition is based on the G 450 d and G 500 models, providing options for both diesel and gasoline enthusiasts. The G 450 d, equipped with a 3.0-liter diesel engine, delivers 362 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque, achieving a 0-100 km/h time of 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 210 km/h. Meanwhile, the G 500, with a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six gasoline engine, boasts 443 horsepower and 560 Nm of torque, shaving the 0-100 km/h time to 5.4 seconds, though it maintains the same top speed.
This dual release demonstrates Mercedes' commitment to honoring the legacy of the G-Class while experimenting with modern aesthetics and unexpected design influences. Both the concept and the special edition invite audiences to appreciate the G-Class not just as a vehicle but as a piece of automotive art, celebrating the past while embracing creative innovation.
