Mercedes-Benz said this month that the 2023 Sprinter will include upgrades to make the van even more capable, even in harsh situations. The updated vehicle will be available for purchase in the United States in early 2023.
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter series in the United States will be powered solely by four-cylinder engines, the firm said today during the 2022 Work Truck Week event. In addition, the van will have a nine-speed transmission and an enhanced all-wheel-drive system. For model year 2023 Sprinters, it will continue to sell both gasoline and diesel engines, but will only offer four-cylinder alternatives. The OM654 engine was created to provide smoother acceleration, more torque, and reduced emissions. Mercedes claims that it is also quieter.
The 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel is no longer in production. The four-cylinder engine comes in two flavors. The less powerful model has 168 horsepower and 400 Newton-meters of torque. The high-output model produces 208 horsepower and 450 Nm.
The previous 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel produced 188 horsepower and 441 Newton-meters of torque. The earlier 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel produced 161 horsepower and 441 Nm.
The 2.0-liter gasoline-powered four-cylinder engine will be carried over to the 2023 Sprinter. It still produces 188 horsepower and 350 Newton-meters of torque.
All Sprinters now have a nine-speed automatic transmission, rather than the seven-speed automatic that was previously offered with the 2.0-liter turbodiesel. According to Mercedes, the new transmission allows for better fuel consumption and faster downshifts.
A new all-wheel-drive system, which replaces the previous 4x4, will also help the vans. It can now transfer 50% of the power to the front wheels, whereas the prior system could only send 35% of the power to the front wheels. The vans will have the same ground clearance, approach angle, departure angle, and break over angle as before, despite the new system.
The AWD system is only available with the new 2.0-liter turbodiesel's high-output variant. Customers in the United States will be able to purchase the new AWD system, 9G-Tronic transmission, and four-cylinder engines early next year.
The new Sprinter range does not yet have a price. Those figures should be available closer to the 2023 van's introduction.
