Mercedes Might Kill Citan

Mercedes is streamlining its vehicle lineup, and that includes changes to its van offerings. As part of this strategy, the automaker is discontinuing the Citan and T-Class compact vans, with production set to end by mid-next year. The final units will be produced at Renault’s Maubeuge facility in France, which also manufactures the similar Renault Kangoo.

A Mercedes spokesperson confirmed the decision to *Automobilwoche*, explaining, “In line with our strategy to focus on growth in profitable segments, announced in May 2023, we’re making strategic investments and refining our product portfolio.” This shift means Mercedes will exit the small van market and concentrate on medium and large vans moving forward.

The move follows declining sales figures. Last year, the Citan sold just 23,351 units, while T-Class sales dropped 31% to 5,117 units.

The Citan was aimed at commercial customers, available as both a panel van and a passenger version, with prices in Germany starting at €24,198. It came with a 101-hp engine and a six-speed manual gearbox.

Meanwhile, the T-Class, starting at €26,795, was marketed more toward families. It featured color-matched bumpers, rear windows, a five-seat layout, and options like heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and more powerful engine choices.
