At the ongoing Shanghai Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz introduced a new addition to its electric vehicle lineup: the Mercedes CLA L, a long-wheelbase version of the CLA sedan that has been tailor-made for the Chinese market. This new model reflects the brand's continued commitment to customizing its vehicles to meet the specific demands and preferences of regional consumers, particularly in China where rear seat comfort is a key priority.

The CLA L closely mirrors the regular CLA in overall styling but distinguishes itself with extended dimensions. It measures 4,763 mm in length, with a 2,865 mm wheelbase—each of these dimensions is 40 mm longer than those of the standard CLA. Interestingly, this makes the CLA L even longer than the current Mercedes C-Class, while matching it in terms of wheelbase. The added length directly benefits rear-seat occupants. To enhance rear passenger comfort, Mercedes has reconfigured the rear seating. The rear seat cushion has been lengthened by 10 mm to provide better leg support, and softer seat bolsters have been incorporated to improve the balance between comfort and structural support.

Inside, the CLA L retains the brand’s familiar luxury tech environment. It includes a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14-inch infotainment display, and a 14-inch screen for the front passenger. However, unlike global versions of Mercedes models, the CLA L’s interface runs on a China-specific version of the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS). This tailored version includes localized features such as a virtual assistant with voice capabilities provided by Chinese voice talent, and integration of ByteDance’s DouBao AI agent. Furthermore, the car supports navigation and data systems that are specifically optimized for China’s roadways and infrastructure.

Under the hood—or more accurately, under the floor—the CLA L is powered by a rear-mounted electric motor that delivers 268 horsepower. Built on an 800-volt architecture, the EV offers rapid charging capabilities, with a 320 kW DC fast charger capable of adding up to 370 km of range in just ten minutes. The vehicle also boasts an impressive CLTC (China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle) range of up to 866 km, reflecting its high efficiency. Mercedes claims this is the most efficient vehicle in its segment, with 93% energy efficiency from battery to wheels. In real-world testing, a prototype achieved an impressive 1,071 km on a single charge, consuming just 8.26 kWh per 100 km when driven at a constant speed.

In summary, the CLA L is a strong example of Mercedes-Benz’s strategy to localize design and technology to meet the needs of different global markets—particularly those with a growing demand for luxury EVs.
