MG Cyber GTS Concept Unveiled at Goodwood

Author: |

MG made an unexpected splash at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed by unveiling the Cyber GTS Concept. This rear-wheel-drive electric vehicle (EV) is a coupe version derived from the MG Cyberster roadster and suggests a potential future production model. The Cyber GTS Concept retains much of the Cyberster's design, including its entire front end, bumpers, and lighting units, but differentiates itself with a fixed roof instead of the roadster’s retractable fabric top. This change gives the coupe a sleeker roofline, a more streamlined greenhouse, and a redesigned rear deck. Details about the interior layout remain undisclosed, leaving open the question of whether the coupe will be a two-seater or adopt a 2+2 configuration.

MG hints that the Cyber GTS Concept is more than just a design study, indicating its potential to evolve into a production model. MG suggests that the Cyber GTS Concept "explores the further potential for MG to forge a new future with a GTS model in the EV era," following in the footsteps of the Cyberster roadster, which debuted in 2023. While MG has not provided technical specifics about the concept, they have confirmed its fully electric powertrain and rear-wheel-drive layout. Given its close ties to the MG Cyberster, it is reasonable to speculate that the two models might share similar specifications.

Currently, the most powerful rear-wheel-drive version of the Cyberster roadster delivers 335 hp, while an all-wheel-drive model with dual electric motors boasts a robust 536 hp. Both versions are equipped with a 77 kWh battery pack. This suggests that the Cyber GTS Concept could offer comparable performance capabilities, positioning it as a formidable contender in the electric sports car market.

The electric coupe seems poised to compete with the forthcoming Porsche 718 Cayman EV, while also paying homage to the classic MGB/MGC GT models of the 1960s. According to MG, the Cyber GTS Concept draws inspiration from the MGC GTS Sebring racecar, which secured a notable 10th overall finish at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1968, marking the best result from the factory MG team in that race. This nod to MG’s racing heritage underscores the brand's intention to blend historical influences with modern electric performance.

The Cyber GTS Concept represents MG's ambitious vision for the future, merging sleek design, cutting-edge electric technology, and a nod to the brand's storied past. As MG continues to develop and refine its electric vehicle lineup, the Cyber GTS Concept could pave the way for a new generation of high-performance, stylish electric coupes. Fans and potential buyers alike will be eagerly awaiting further announcements and technical details as MG moves closer to turning this exciting concept into a production reality.
