MG to Challenge Camry Dominance in Australia

Get ready for a new player to shake up the Aussie sedan market! MG, the car brand that's been making waves, is gearing up to take on the mighty Toyota Camry. Yep, you heard that right. They're bringing out a brand new sedan called the MG 7, and they're aiming it straight at the Camry's top spot.

Initially, the MG 7 was not slated for release in Australia when it debuted overseas in 2022. However, a right-hand-drive version has since been developed and is anticipated to hit Australian shores next year, barring any delays. This launch will mark the introduction of the largest passenger car MG has ever sold in Australia, following the release of the Corolla-sized MG 5 sedan last year. The MG 7 will also follow in the footsteps of the MG 6 sedan, which was discontinued five years ago.

Unlike the Toyota Camry, which is available exclusively with a petrol-electric hybrid engine in Australia, the MG 7 does not currently offer a hybrid option in any market. It remains uncertain whether a hybrid version will be developed in time for the Australian launch. In its domestic market, the MG 7 comes with a choice of two turbocharged four-cylinder engines: a 1.5-litre engine producing 187 horsepower and 300Nm of torque, and a 2.0-litre engine delivering 261 horsepower and 405Nm of torque. The most powerful variant can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in a claimed 6.5 seconds.

The MG 7 measures 4884mm in length, 1889mm in width, and 1447mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2778mm. These dimensions make it nearly the same length and height as the Toyota Camry, although it is about 50mm wider and has a wheelbase that is 50mm shorter. One distinctive feature of the MG 7 is its active rear spoiler, which extends at speeds above 100 km/h and retracts back into the boot lid at speeds below 70 km/h, a design element reminiscent of many sports cars.

Pricing for the MG 7 in Australia has not yet been confirmed. However, based on the pricing of other MG models, it is expected that the MG 7 will be more affordable than the Camry Hybrid, which currently starts at around $42,000 drive-away. It should be noted that a new, and likely more expensive, version of the Camry is expected to be released later this year.

2024 MG 7

In summary, the introduction of the MG 7 in Australia signifies MG's continued expansion and ambition in the mid-size sedan market. With its competitive pricing and features, the MG 7 aims to provide a compelling alternative to the Toyota Camry, appealing to consumers looking for both value and performance in their next vehicle.
