The newly unveiled MG4 EV hatchback has officially made its debut in China, following the release of its technical specifications by local authorities. This new electric model, developed by SAIC Motor Corporation, is set to become MG's first truly global vehicle for the 2025 model year. It is intended to replace the outgoing MG4 Electric, which experienced disappointing sales performance in China. MG, originally a British automotive brand, was acquired by the Chinese state-owned automaker SAIC in 2005. While the brand has struggled to gain significant traction within China, it has managed to establish a stronger presence and better sales figures in international markets. On March 20, MG formally announced that the redesigned MG4 EV would be their flagship global offering for 2025.
In the official images, the new MG4 EV appears in a light purple hue with contrasting white roof and pillars, giving it a sleek two-tone aesthetic. Its front design features sharp LED headlights and a sporty front bumper equipped with a trapezoidal air intake. The sculpted fenders provide a more aggressive stance and give the impression of a wider body. The charging port is conveniently located on the front left fender. Notably, the MG4 EV sticks to traditional door handles rather than opting for the modern flush-mounted ones commonly seen on newer EVs. While this design choice enhances user-friendliness, it slightly compromises aerodynamic efficiency. The vehicle rides on five-spoke 17-inch wheels that, while stylish, also contribute to increased air resistance.
At the rear, the MG4 EV boasts a roof-mounted spoiler integrated with a brake light, a rear windshield wiper, and a pair of arrow-shaped taillights connected by an LED strip. The minimalist rear bumper design adds to the car’s modern look, and the presence of an independent rear suspension system suggests a focus on comfort and driving dynamics.
Dimension-wise, the new MG4 EV measures 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 1,551 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm. It is 108 mm longer than its predecessor, offering slightly more interior space. Under the hood, it houses a single TZ180XS1001 electric motor capable of producing up to 161 horsepower. This marks a slight decrease from the previous standard MG4 Electric, which featured a 168 hp motor, and a significant reduction compared to the high-performance 422 hp Xpower version. The new model has a top speed of 160 km/h and is powered by a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery supplied by Rept Battero Energy, though its capacity has yet to be revealed. The car’s curb weight stands at 1,485 kilograms.
The updated MG4 EV is anticipated to be officially launched in China in April, potentially during the Shanghai Auto Show. It is expected to reach European markets by the fourth quarter of 2025. The redesigned model comes at a time when the original MG4 EV has been struggling to compete in the increasingly competitive Chinese electric vehicle segment, managing to sell only 13 units in February 2025. MG hopes the new iteration will fare better and effectively rival models such as the BYD Dolphin, Wuling Bingo, Aion UT, and Geely Xingyuan.
