MG Motor has introduced a refreshed version of its MG5 sedan in the Chinese market, marking a significant update to the second-generation model that debuted five years ago. The facelifted MG5 features a revised exterior design, an upgraded interior, and carries over the same powertrain options.
While the overall silhouette remains largely unchanged, the MG5 has received a number of visual enhancements. The front end has been redesigned with a wider grille and revised bumper intakes, while the headlights have been given a more aggressive look. At the rear, the taillights have been extended, and the rear bumper features more pronounced fake vents and a body-colored diffuser. The facelifted MG5 has grown by 40 mm in length, now measuring 4,715 mm long, while the rest of its dimensions remain unchanged.
Inside, the interior has undergone a complete overhaul, adopting a more conventional layout compared to the asymmetrical design of the previous model. The standout feature is a new digital cockpit with dual 12.3-inch displays, along with fewer buttons on the center console and chrome-finished climate vents. While there is no official information regarding safety upgrades, it is hoped that the facelifted MG5 will improve upon the zero-star ANCAP crash test rating of its predecessor.
Under the hood, the MG5 continues to be powered by the same 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine options. The base model features a naturally aspirated engine producing 127 horsepower, paired with either a five-speed manual or a CVT transmission. The flagship turbocharged version offers 179 horsepower and 285 Nm of torque, transmitted to the front axle through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
The MG5 has been a significant sales success in China, accounting for half of MG's total sales in the first half of 2024. However, it faces stiff competition from other sedan models like the Changan Eado and the Geely Emgrand, which have outsold the MG5 by a considerable margin.
The facelifted MG5 is scheduled to make its official debut on August 30 at the Chengdu Auto Show in China. It is expected to be launched in other markets shortly thereafter, including Australia, Mexico, Thailand, the Philippines, and the Middle East. It's worth noting that the UK-spec MG5 EV is a separate model, based on the fully electric Roewe Ei5 Estate.
