MG, the British-badged brand now under Chinese ownership, is poised to disrupt the European automotive market once again with its latest offering: the MGS5 EV, an electric SUV slated to debut this spring. This new model, positioned as the successor to the MG ZS EV, is generating significant buzz due to its anticipated competitive pricing and compelling features, posing a potential threat to established European automakers like Volkswagen and Stellantis.
The MGS5 EV is built upon the same modular scalable platform (MSP) as the highly acclaimed MG4 hatchback. The MG4 has garnered rave reviews and achieved impressive sales figures in markets like the UK, largely attributed to its attractive price point. The MGS5 EV is expected to follow in its footsteps, offering a compelling combination of value and technology. Notably, the new SUV is considerably larger than its predecessor, measuring approximately 4,480 mm in length, which represents a substantial 162 mm increase over the outgoing ZS EV.
MG had already launched the Chinese version of this model, known as the ES5, in October of the previous year. This provides valuable insights into what to expect from the European-spec MGS5 EV. Teaser images released as part of the European launch campaign showcase a modern and stylish design, featuring a prominent full-width LED light bar at the rear, incorporating an illuminated MG logo that seamlessly blends into the wraparound taillights. The rear hatch features a subtle spoiler, and the taillights form a distinctive Y shape. Interestingly, the door handles are of the traditional pull type rather than the increasingly popular flush-fitting design.
While MG has not yet released detailed specifications for the MGS5 EV, the MG4's powertrain options provide some clues. The MG4 range starts with a 168 hp single-motor configuration driving the front wheels, which is the same setup confirmed for the Chinese-market ES5. In Europe, the MG4 is also available with a more powerful 201 hp single motor and a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive XPower variant boasting an impressive 429 hp. It is anticipated that MG will offer one or both of these higher-performance options in the European-spec MGS5 EV.
One area where the MG4 has received some criticism is its interior, with some reviewers noting that the cabin design, materials, and infotainment system lag behind those of some European, Japanese, and Korean competitors. However, MG has stated that the MGS5 EV will feature a "premium" cabin while maintaining the brand's commitment to value. Considering that the smaller ZS EV, which this model replaces, starts at £30,495 in the UK, it is projected that the MGS5 EV will have a starting price in the range of £32,000 to £34,000.
With its competitive pricing, larger size, and anticipated premium interior, the MGS5 EV has the potential to significantly impact the European electric SUV market. MG's strategy of offering compelling value and technology is proving to be a successful formula, and the MGS5 EV is well-positioned to continue this trend, putting pressure on established automakers to respond.
