Porsche's Sonderwunsch program, which translates to "special wishes," offers a unique opportunity for select customers to collaborate directly with the automaker to create bespoke vehicles tailored to their exact preferences, provided the requests are feasible. Italian designer Luca Trazzi, known for his impressive collection of Porsche Speedsters, sought a 993 model for his collection. Although Porsche never officially produced a 993 Speedster, having only created special versions for Ferry Porsche, Jerry Seinfeld, and for factory restorations, Trazzi's vision has now come to life as the fourth of its kind.
Trazzi played a significant role in designing this special vehicle, working closely with the Porsche Sonderwunsch team. The custom creation is based on a 993 Carrera Cabriolet and features distinctive modifications that set it apart. These modifications include a uniquely shortened windshield and a redesigned rear decklid. Aesthetic details such as black 18-inch Turbo twist wheels with body-colored pinstriping, retro-styled mirrors, and a yellow-and-black checkered-flag trim on the seats contribute to its unique look. Additionally, the headlights incorporate a four-dot running light design reminiscent of modern Porsche models, and the car’s vibrant yellow color is named in honor of Trazzi's dog, Otto.
The custom features extend beyond the exterior. Certain trim elements, including the front spoiler, side skirts, and rear quarter panels, draw inspiration from those found on the 993 Turbo. The sharkfin rock protector positioned ahead of the rear wheels pays homage to the 1989 911 Speedster. For performance, the vehicle utilizes components from the 993 Carrera RS, including its 3.8-liter flat-six engine, which delivers 300 horsepower. This engine, paired with a six-speed manual transmission, provides a thrilling driving experience.
Inside, the cabin is elegantly finished in black leather with contrasting yellow stitching, and the seats feature hand-sewn checkered patterns. This bespoke treatment extends to the luggage compartment, which includes a matching touring bag. Carbon fiber accents enhance the interior, including on the seatbacks and illuminated door sills. Custom touches continue with power window switches adorned with bespoke symbols, a unique badge on the dashboard, and Speedster embroidery on the headrests. The Porsche Classic Communication Management system integrates modern navigation and Apple CarPlay into a classic design.
The extensive development process also addressed the vehicle's underpinnings. Porsche sourced the engine, steering, and brakes from the legendary 911 Carrera RS, a model renowned for its lightweight construction and high performance from the 1994 and 1995 model years. The heart of the car is a naturally aspirated, air-cooled 3.8-liter flat-six engine generating approximately 300 horsepower, driving the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission.
Porsche is showcasing this one-off creation at Monterey Car Week before sending it back to Europe for Trazzi to take final delivery. Throughout the build process, Trazzi was involved in various stages, including observing the galvanization of the bare bodyshell and even applying some of the paint himself. While Sonderwunsch has a long history of customizing production models and crafting unique one-offs, this particular project represents Porsche's first bespoke restoration for a private customer since formalizing the commissioning process a few years ago. Although the starting fee for such a project is around $100,000, it is likely to rise significantly with the customization. In a realm where many seek their own unique Porsche, this vehicle stands as the pinnacle of personalized automotive excellence.
