Renault has made a splash at the 2024 Paris Auto Show with the surprise unveiling of its Embleme concept car. This futuristic crossover features a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) powertrain that utilizes hydrogen as a range-extender. Notably, the Embleme is designed to reduce lifetime CO2 emissions by an impressive 90 percent compared to a modern production vehicle.
The 4.8-meter long concept showcases an aerodynamic silhouette and aggressive styling cues that evoke Renault's design language from the late 1990s. The sharp nose bears a resemblance to the Safrane and Laguna sedans, albeit with futuristic LED lighting and sleek curves. The rear is equally striking, featuring a sculpted tailgate and a deconstructed version of the Renault rhombus logo integrated into the high-tech taillights. The Embleme's body style blends elements of a crossover, hatchback, and shooting brake, positioning it within Europe's midsize segment.
While Renault hasn't released interior photos, they've stated that the spacious cabin, thanks to a 2.9-meter wheelbase, can comfortably accommodate families. The Embleme's aerodynamic efficiency is further enhanced by clever design features such as a flat underbody, mirror-replacing cameras, aero-optimized wheels, and fins on the hood. These elements contribute to an impressive aerodynamic coefficient of 0.25 cd.
The concept is built on the AmpR Medium architecture, an evolution of the CMF-EV platform that underpins the Megane E-Tech and Scenic E-Tech. The "dual power energy electric powertrain" combines a 40 kWh Nickel Manganese Cobalt battery pack for daily driving with a hydrogen fuel cell for extended journeys. Both power a single electric motor that produces a respectable 215 horsepower.
Renault claims that the battery alone offers a substantial range of "several hundred kilometers," while the 2.8 kg hydrogen tank extends the range by an additional 350 km. Overall, the Embleme can travel a remarkable 621 miles with two 5-minute refueling stops, matching the refueling time of an internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle. This is made possible by the availability of hydrogen refueling stations along the route. The Embleme's efficiency is also aided by its relatively low weight of 1,750 kg, including the fuel cell and battery.
