Scout’s New Electric Off-Roaders Ready for 2027

Author: |

The Scout brand is making a comeback after a 44-year absence with two new production-intent concepts: the Traveler SUV and the Terra truck. Inspired by the original Scout vehicles produced by International Harvester from 1961 to 1980, these electric vehicles (EVs) embody the spirit of the classics while embracing modern technology and rugged design. Although these concepts won’t be the exact models sold in 2027, they provide a clear vision of what’s to come.

Scout Terra

Much like Rivian’s R1T and R1S, the Traveler and Terra share many design elements. Both vehicles have a bold, clean front design, featuring a sizable skid plate, blacked-out grille, simple headlights, and horizontal daytime running lights (DRLs). The Scout logo is strategically placed on the right of the grille, subtly reminiscent of a signature on a piece of art. The designs boast short front overhangs, but the Traveler’s rear overhang is particularly noticeable in profile. Other notable design details include blacked-out arches, skirts, and bumpers, black wheels with all-terrain tires, and robust black pillars. At the rear, the Traveler distinguishes itself with a split tailgate and a swing-out spare wheel carrier, while both models feature LED taillights. The Terra’s LED taillights are more elaborate, wrapping around the tailgate for added flair.

Both models will be built on a proprietary body-on-frame platform designed for rugged terrain and versatile functionality. They can accommodate tires as large as 35 inches, with ground clearance exceeding one foot, and water-fording capability of nearly three feet. The off-road features include a front sway bar disconnect, front and rear mechanical lockers, and a solid rear axle. The Scout Terra truck will offer a 5.5-foot bed equipped with two 120-volt power outlets and one 240-volt outlet. For those wanting an integrated spare tire setup, the Traveler comes with a rear carrier that fits a full-size 35-inch tire. Meanwhile, the Terra can carry a 33-inch spare underneath, with an option for an in-bed tire carrier that can hold a 35-inch spare.

Inside the cabin, Scout aims to blend retro charm with modern utility, taking inspiration from the original Scout II. Tactile controls for climate are located below a large central screen, allowing for a practical yet nostalgic user experience. Notably, the Terra offers an optional front bench seat, replacing the multifunction center console, while both models will include traditional mechanical door handles. The Traveler, however, will feature a multifunction center console with ample storage space and cupholders. Both vehicles will support over-the-air updates and remote diagnostics, ensuring they stay current with software advancements.

One of the unique features offered is the optional “Harvester” system, an extended-range gas-powered generator that can extend the vehicle’s range to over 500 miles. On their own, the EVs will deliver around 350 miles per charge. Although official specs haven’t been released, Scout claims the EVs will have enough torque to achieve 0 to 60 mph in approximately 3.5 seconds, with nearly 1,000 pound-feet of estimated torque. In terms of towing capacity, the Traveler SUV is projected to tow over 7,000 pounds, while the Terra truck will handle more than 10,000 pounds. Both models are also capable of carrying nearly 2,000 pounds of payload, showcasing their heavy-duty potential.

The Scout models will be compatible with the North American Charging Standard, incorporating 800-volt architecture, bi-directional charging, and up to 350 kW of charging power. This fast-charging capability, combined with their rugged build, makes the Traveler and Terra versatile choices for both off-road adventures and daily tasks. Their off-road features—such as up to 35-inch tires, ample ground clearance, and enhanced water-fording capabilities—are complemented by advanced mechanics like a front sway bar disconnect and mechanical lockers on both axles, ensuring they’re ready to tackle challenging terrains.

With these impressive specs and thoughtful design choices, Scout’s return signals a bold step forward in the electric off-road market, aiming to deliver vehicles that honor their heritage while providing modern capabilities and electric power.
