South Africa Will Get BYD Sealion 7 EV This Year

BYD is set to expand its presence in the South African automotive market with the introduction of the Sealion 7 this year. This latest addition will join BYD's existing lineup in the region, which currently includes the Dolphin, Atto 3, and Seal models. The Sealion 7's arrival will be part of a broader expansion strategy that also includes the forthcoming launches of the Shark 6 and Sealion 6, further solidifying BYD's commitment to the South African market. While BYD has confirmed the Sealion 7's arrival, specific pricing details and an official launch date are yet to be disclosed.

The BYD Sealion 7, known as the Sealion 07 EV in its Chinese domestic market, made its initial debut on May 10th of the previous year. This medium-sized pure electric SUV, part of BYD's Ocean Series, is offered in China in four distinct trim levels, with a price range of 189,800 to 239,800 yuan, translating to approximately $26,100 to $33,000.

The design of the BYD Sealion 7 is rooted in the BYD Ocean X concept car, showcasing the brand's latest design language. The vehicle boasts dimensions of 4830 mm in length, 1925 mm in width, and 1620 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2930 mm. The curb weight of the vehicle varies between 2155 kg and 2330 kg, depending on the chosen trim level, and it features a minimum turning radius of 5.85 meters.

The interior of the BYD Sealion 7 is characterized by a technologically advanced and user-centric design. A 15.6-inch central control screen, capable of rotation, serves as the centerpiece of the dashboard, complemented by a 10.25-inch LCD instrument panel, a 50-inch head-up display, and a flat-bottom steering wheel. All trim levels come standard with the DiLink100 intelligent system, providing a comprehensive suite of connectivity and infotainment features.

The BYD Sealion 7 is equipped with a comprehensive array of sensors and cameras to support its advanced driving assistance systems. This includes 12 ultrasonic radars, five millimeter-wave radars, and 11 cameras, powering the DiPilot 100 advanced driving assistance system. The vehicle also features a five-link rear suspension system and variable damping shock absorbers as standard. The all-wheel-drive (AWD) variants further benefit from BYD’s DiSus-C Intelligent Damping Body Control System, enhancing ride comfort and handling.

The BYD Sealion 7 is available in both rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and AWD configurations. The RWD model is powered by a permanent magnet synchronous motor, delivering 308 horsepower and 380 Nm of torque. The AWD model adds a front AC asynchronous motor, providing an additional 215 horsepower and 310 Nm of torque. The top speed of the vehicle ranges from 210 km/h to 225 km/h, and the 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time varies from 7.3 seconds to 4.2 seconds, depending on the chosen trim level.

The BYD Sealion 7 is powered by BYD's Blade LFP battery packs, available in 71.808 kWh and 80.640 kWh capacities. These battery packs provide CLTC cruising ranges of 550 km and 610 km, respectively. The vehicle supports fast charging, enabling the battery to be replenished from 10% to 80% in just 25 minutes. This combination of range, performance, and charging capabilities positions the BYD Sealion 7 as a compelling option in the South African electric vehicle market.
