Subaru’s Trailseeker Set to Turn Heads in New York

Subaru isn’t just unveiling the next-generation Outback at this month’s New York Auto Show—it’s also teasing the debut of another vehicle: the 2026 Trailseeker. So, what is the Trailseeker exactly? At this point, Subaru has only shared two confirmed details: it’s an electric vehicle, and a teaser image reveals a portion of its tailgate and a rugged rear bumper.

There haven’t been any recent sightings of Subaru EV prototypes, so details remain largely speculative. However, what we do know is that Subaru is developing a compact electric SUV in partnership with Toyota, with plans to release it in Japan, Europe, and North America. Some believe this model could be a counterpart to Toyota’s new CH-R+, which is coming to the U.S. next year—but current hints suggest otherwise. It appears both automakers are preparing distinct compact EVs, and the Trailseeker is likely Subaru’s version.

These two SUVs may share a platform, much like the Subaru Solterra and Toyota bZ4X do, differing mostly in exterior design. From Toyota’s teaser of its own version, it looks to have a conventional SUV silhouette with roof rails, a defined front end, and a boxier rear—similar to the RAV4. Subaru’s Trailseeker will probably lean into its rugged, outdoorsy brand identity, featuring more aggressive body cladding and other off-road-inspired elements to suit its adventurous name.

Fortunately, we won’t have to wait much longer for answers—the New York International Auto Show begins April 17. Stay tuned.
