The Rex, Subaru's first urban SUV, was launched in Japan. The vehicle is actually a Toyota Raize with a different name. The first Subaru Rex was a kei vehicle built between 1972 and 1992 under that name. The new Rex has a body shape similar to an urban SUV, unlike its predecessors.
Given that they share all of the body panels, the Subaru Rex and Daihatsu Rocky have almost identical styling. The new grille pattern with horizontal slats is the only modification, leaving the Subaru badging out.
The vehicle comes in two trim levels: the base G, which has alloy wheels that measure 16 inches, and the higher-end Z, which has wheels that measure 17 inches with complete LED headlights and foglights.
The interior appears to be very familiar. A digital instrument cluster and a 7-inch or 9-inch infotainment screen are available depending on the grade. Red highlights are also present on the seats and dashboard of the higher-spec vehicle. Six airbags and the Smart Assist ADAS suite, which includes BSM and RCTA, are included in the safety features.
Based on DNGA design, the Subaru-branded urban SUV is only available with a 1.2-liter naturally aspirated engine that generates 80 horsepower and 105 Nm of torque. The front axle receives power via a CVT transmission with seven simulated speeds.
In Japan, you can already place an order for the Subaru Rex. The G and Z have starting prices of $12,977 and $15,474, respectively.
