Subaru has shared additional details about its upcoming electrified boxer powertrain, set to debut in the 2025 Crosstrek Hybrid. This next-generation hybrid system will be introduced in December, marking a significant step forward for Subaru’s eco-friendly technology. The Crosstrek will be the first model to utilize this advanced hybrid powertrain, which combines the brand’s signature boxer engine with a sophisticated electric system for improved efficiency and performance.

At the heart of the system is a newly developed 2.5-liter boxer engine that generates 158 horsepower and 209 Nm of torque. This internal combustion engine is complemented by a rear-mounted 1.1 kWh lithium-ion battery and a transaxle housing two electric motors. One of these motors functions as a motor-generator, while the other serves as a traction motor, delivering 118 horsepower and 270 Nm of torque. The traction motor is designed to be the primary source of power in various driving conditions, and it can even enable the vehicle to operate in an all-electric mode for short distances.

The 2025 Crosstrek Hybrid is not only focused on performance but also on extending driving range. Thanks to a larger fuel tank that can hold 16.6 gallons and a 20% increase in fuel efficiency compared to the current hybrid system, the Crosstrek Hybrid boasts the longest cruising range of any Subaru vehicle to date. With an estimated range of over 621 miles on a single tank, the Crosstrek offers diesel-like mileage, although Subaru cautions that this is a theoretical figure based on the optimistic WTLC cycle.

The hybrid system operates as a series-parallel setup, meaning the Crosstrek can run on either the gas engine or the electric motor. The traction motor plays a key role here, offering extended electric driving capabilities, although the small 1.1-kWh battery means these EV-only distances will be limited before the gas engine kicks in. The lithium-ion battery, positioned under the cargo floor, is a newly developed component. Subaru claims the battery is lightweight, long-lasting, and built with high-density cells to maximize efficiency.

In terms of performance, the Crosstrek Hybrid retains Subaru’s hallmark symmetrical all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. This system mechanically couples the front and rear wheels via a propeller shaft, providing strong off-road capabilities and stability in various driving conditions. Additionally, the Crosstrek Hybrid includes a 1,500-watt outlet in the cargo area, allowing owners to power appliances or camping gear, enhancing its utility for outdoor enthusiasts.

The Crosstrek Hybrid will be offered in two trims in Japan. The base model, dubbed the e-Boxer, features 18-inch aluminum wheels, e-Boxer badging, and a two-tone interior. The cabin is equipped with a leather-wrapped steering wheel, black trim, and a 4.2-inch multi-information display. The higher-end EX variant adds more luxury and tech, including a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, GPS navigation, and Subaru’s EyeSight system, which now includes Active Lane Change Assist and Traffic Jam Assist for enhanced safety.
