Skoda has introduced a new electric vehicle (EV) called the Epiq, positioned as an entry-level offering in the EV market. Scheduled for release in 2025, this compact fully electric SUV comes with an attractive starting price of €25,000 and pledges a roomy interior coupled with a driving range exceeding 400 km.
The debut of the Epiq took center stage at Skoda's 2024 Annual Press Conference, where the company not only disclosed its financial performance but also outlined its forthcoming strategic initiatives. While expectations were initially geared towards the unveiling of the Elroq compact SUV, intended as a zero-emission counterpart to the Karoq and set for release this year, attendees were taken aback by the reveal of a concept previewing the Skoda Epiq. This upcoming model, slated for launch the following year, is positioned as a counterpart to the forthcoming VW ID.2 and Cupra Raval.
In terms of size, the Skoda Epiq measures approximately 4.1 meters in length, akin to the dimensions of the Fabia hatchback. Its exterior design adopts Skoda's latest Modern Solid design language, characterized by an elevated stance, contemporary design elements, and a distinctive LED lighting pattern.
The Epiq EV draws inspiration from the Skoda Vision 7S Concept introduced in 2022, particularly evident in its "Tech-Deck Face" design replacing the conventional grille. Presented in a Moon White hue with subtle orange accents and futuristic three-spoke alloy wheels, the concept further incorporates oversized skid plates functioning as intakes, roof rails, and textured plastic cladding, all contributing to its adventurous appeal. The extent to which these design elements will feature in the final production version remains to be seen.
Despite its compact stature, Skoda assures that the Epiq offers a remarkably spacious interior. With seating for five passengers and a generous 490-liter boot capacity, it aligns with Skoda's commitment to maximizing interior space while also integrating sustainable materials and practical features, consistent with the brand's future direction.
At the forefront of the minimalist dashboard design is a large standalone infotainment screen, accompanied by a smaller digital instrument cluster. Notable interior features include a futuristic two-spoke steering wheel with integrated controls, sleek climate vents, a mobile digital key, and a wireless charging compartment situated beneath physical buttons on the center console.
While specific technical specifications beyond the 400 km range weren't disclosed by Skoda, the company confirmed the Epiq's support for bi-directional charging, enabling owners to utilize battery power for operating electronic devices and household appliances.
Production of the Skoda Epiq is slated to commence in 2025 at the VW Group facility in Pamplona, Spain, alongside the VW ID.2 and Cupra Raval. These three subcompact EVs will share a new iteration of the MEB architecture, potentially offering identical powertrain and battery options, marking a significant step forward in the electrification efforts of the VW Group.
