Volvo has introduced a refreshed version of its long-standing XC90 SUV, focusing on improved efficiency and enhanced interior technology. The latest iteration of the XC90 comes with upgraded hybrid drivetrains and interior updates aimed at elevating both comfort and user experience.

Visually, the XC90 remains as appealing as ever, retaining its signature elegance. The subtle design tweaks, including the updated Thor’s Hammer LED headlights, now resemble those of the fully electric EX90, which recently hit the market. Another notable exterior enhancement is the redesigned grille, featuring a diagonal pattern that adds to the SUV’s refined look while maintaining the XC90’s recognizable style.

Inside, the updates are subtle yet meaningful, particularly with improvements to the materials and technology. One significant change is the introduction of a larger portrait-style touchscreen, now measuring 11.2 inches, an upgrade from the previous 9.0-inch display. This larger screen not only offers better visuals but also comes with a redesigned operating system, making it more user-friendly. The revised system is structured to improve accessibility, reducing the number of finger presses required to navigate apps, thereby enhancing the overall ease of use. This focus on improving technology aligns with Volvo’s ongoing efforts to make its vehicles more intuitive and connected.

The hybrid options in the XC90 lineup continue to evolve. The T8 plug-in hybrid model combines a 306-horsepower gasoline engine with a 143-horsepower electric motor, providing a total output that delivers solid performance. The T8 can travel 44 miles on electric power alone, according to the WLTP standard, which is a decent range but falls short when compared to some of its more modern competitors. For instance, newer plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) models like the Volkswagen Tiguan and the Range Rover have set higher benchmarks, offering electric-only ranges of up to 113 kilometers. Even the aging Audi Q7 PHEV outperforms the XC90 in this regard, with an electric range of 84 kilometers.

However, Volvo has also placed significant emphasis on refining its mild-hybrid offerings, with the B5 and B6 models. The B5 features a 247-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while the B6 offers a more powerful 296-horsepower turbocharged and supercharged engine. Both of these mild-hybrid options promise better fuel efficiency, with mpg improvements that make them more economical choices for drivers. Additionally, Volvo has made revisions to the XC90’s suspension system and increased the level of soundproofing, resulting in a quieter, more comfortable ride. These changes aim to enhance the overall driving experience, focusing on both comfort and efficiency.

Volvo XC90 PHEV

While the XC90’s electric-only range may not lead the pack in the PHEV segment, Volvo’s latest facelift brings notable improvements to this already popular SUV. With enhanced hybrid performance, interior upgrades, and a more refined driving experience, the XC90 continues to be a strong contender in the luxury SUV market.
