Wuling has officially introduced the Xing Guang S, or Starlight S, in China, a new crossover that aims to compete in the growing plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and electric vehicle (EV) markets. The model features a sleek, modern design, with styling elements that resemble those found on Buick vehicles, and it offers both plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrain options, making it a versatile choice for consumers.

The plug-in hybrid version of the Starlight S is equipped with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine, which is paired with an electric motor capable of producing 201 horsepower and 310 Nm of torque. This powertrain is supported by two different lithium iron phosphate battery options: a 9.5 kWh battery, which provides a range of 60 kilometers on the CLTC cycle, and a larger 20.5 kWh battery, which extends the electric-only range to 130 kilometers. With a full charge and a tank of gasoline, the PHEV version boasts an impressive combined range of up to 1,100 kilometers. Additionally, it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.9 seconds, offering solid performance for a vehicle in its class.

The fully electric version of the Starlight S shares the same motor as the PHEV but is powered by a significantly larger 60 kWh battery pack. This setup allows the EV to accelerate slightly quicker, reaching 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds, and offers a range of up to 510 kilometers on a single charge. This gives it a competitive edge in terms of electric-only range, making it a viable option for those seeking a fully electric vehicle with decent driving performance.

In terms of size, the Xing Guang S is larger than the Chevrolet Equinox but smaller than the Buick Electra E5. It measures 4,745 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,680 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,800 mm. The exterior features flowing bodywork, plastic body cladding, split lighting units, rain-sensing wipers, and 18-inch alloy wheels, giving it a stylish yet functional appearance.

Inside, the Starlight S offers a minimalist but well-appointed cabin. It features an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and a large 15.6-inch infotainment system. The front seats are leather-wrapped and can fold flat to create "nap beds," adding a unique touch of comfort. The interior also boasts 23 storage compartments and a cargo area that expands to 1,768 liters when the rear seats are folded down. Higher-end variants provide additional luxury features such as heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a panoramic moonroof, and a Level 2 semi-autonomous driving system. Additionally, a power supply system provides up to 3.3 kW of electricity, ideal for activities like camping.

The Starlight S is competitively priced, starting at $14,014 for the PHEV model and $16,822 for the EV. This affordability has contributed to its early success, with Wuling receiving over 10,000 pre-orders since the beginning of August. With its combination of style, performance, and practicality, the Xing Guang S is positioned to make a significant impact in China's growing electric and hybrid vehicle market.
