The Xpeng X9 MPV, a large, luxury electric minivan, has achieved a five-star rating in the C-NCAP safety and crash test. With an overall score of 86.6%, it aligns closely with the JAC Yiwei 3 small hatchback. A detailed analysis of the Xpeng X9's crash test results reveals its strengths and weaknesses in terms of safety.

The Xpeng X9, launched in early 2024, boasts impressive dimensions of 5293/1988/1785 mm. Its overall C-NCAP score of 86.6% surpasses the average performance of models tested in 2021. In the occupant protection segment, the Xpeng X9 scored 86.18%, excelling in side pillar impact but exhibiting minor damage to passenger dummies during the full-width frontal impact. The pedestrian protection category proved to be the Xpeng X9's weakest, scoring 69.92%. The rigid bonnet contributed to potential pedestrian injuries in a collision.

However, the Xpeng X9's performance in active safety is commendable, achieving a score of 97.68%. This is significantly higher than the average and ranks second only to the Aito M9. The absence of the speed assist system (SAS) was the only drawback. It's important to note that the evaluated Xpeng X9 was the top-trim FWD variant equipped with all available ADAS hardware.

The Xpeng X9 offers two powertrain options: FWD with 320 hp and 4WD with 503 hp. Battery pack choices include an 84.5 kWh LFP battery for the entry-level model and a 101.5 kWh ternary NMC battery. The cruising range varies from 640 to 702 km (CLTC).

The C-NCAP crash performance program, established by CATARC in 2006, has become increasingly stringent. The evaluated Xpeng X9, the 702 km LR Max trim level priced at $56,450, is the top-trim variant with front-wheel drive. This version features the navigation on autopilot system suitable for cities, a feature absent in cheaper trim levels. The X9 702 km LR Max also boasts two Nvidia Drive Orin X chips for advanced computing power and a pair of 126-line LiDAR sensors. Other safety equipment is consistent across trim levels.
