MG has unveiled the latest iteration of its entry-level model, the MG3, marking a significant upgrade both visually and technologically. The subcompact hatchback has undergone a striking makeover and now exclusively features a new self-charging hybrid powertrain, delivering a combined output of 192 horsepower.

The refreshed appearance of the new MG3 was teased earlier, showcasing sharper lines and a more contemporary design. Designed in Shanghai, the hatchback draws inspiration from its larger siblings, the MG5 and MG7 sedans, boasting aggressive facial features and sculpted bodywork.

With dimensions measuring 4,113 mm in length, 1,797 mm in width, and 1,502 mm in height, the new MG3 is slightly longer, wider, and lower than its predecessor. This expanded footprint translates to a more spacious cabin, accommodating occupants comfortably, along with a 293-liter boot space, surpassing that of its rival, the Toyota Yaris Hybrid.

Stepping into the fully digital cockpit, drivers are greeted with a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, complete with navigation and seamless connectivity through Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The center console features an array of toggle-style switches, complemented by four USB ports and additional buttons on the steering wheel. Safety features include the MG Pilot ADAS suite, incorporating adaptive cruise control among other systems.

In a departure from its predecessor, the 2024 MG3 is exclusively offered with a self-charging hybrid powertrain. The Hybrid+ setup comprises a four-cylinder 1.5-liter gasoline engine generating 101 horsepower, paired with a single electric motor producing 134 horsepower, supported by a 1.83 kWh battery and a three-speed automatic gearbox. Drivers can choose from three driving modes – Eco, Standard, and Sport – with the latter enabling a swift 0-100 km/h acceleration in just 8 seconds. Despite its performance, the MG3 maintains a combined fuel consumption of 4.4 liters per 100 kilometers and emits 100 g/km of CO2.

Underpinning the new MG3 is a chassis enhanced with new "ultra-high stiffness components," combined with a revised suspension setup, resulting in improved handling, ride comfort, and noise insulation compared to its predecessor.

Competitors of the new MG3 equipped with self-charging hybrid setups include the Toyota Yaris, Renault Clio, and Honda Jazz. Meanwhile, other contenders in the segment offer mild-hybrid powertrains or non-electrified engines.
