BMW recently marked the 25th anniversary of the X5 with limited editions in North America, but for the Chinese market, BMW’s local branch opted to do something unique. BMW introduced the China-exclusive Dark Flame Limited Edition, bringing customized exterior and interior details to the extended-wheelbase X5 Li model. This special edition offers an exclusive style and luxury that’s tailored specifically for Chinese customers.
The Dark Flame Limited Edition is built on the refreshed X5 Li, introduced in 2023, which is the long-wheelbase version of the X5. Measuring 5,060 mm in length and boasting a 3,105 mm wheelbase, the X5 Li is notably larger than the standard model and even matches up to BMW’s bigger models like the X7 and XM. This expanded size provides extra interior space, which is ideal for those seeking more comfort and room in a luxury SUV. The Dark Flame edition, as the name suggests, focuses on a bold, dark aesthetic with a Sapphire Blue exterior contrasted by Titan Gold accents. These gold touches highlight key areas such as the illuminated kidney grille, front bumper air intakes, side vents, window trims, and the badges on the tailgate. Adding to its distinct appearance, the SUV sits on black 22-inch alloy wheels with M-branded brake calipers. There are other unique details, too, like smoked black taillights, Dark Flame graphics on the puddle lights, and a dark finish on the dual exhaust pipes.
Inside, the Dark Flame Limited Edition keeps the moody, luxurious theme. The seats are upholstered in black Sensafin synthetic leather, complemented by a dark grey Alcantara headliner surrounding the “starry sky” panoramic sunroof. BMW added gold stitching and carbon fiber inserts on the dashboard and center console to accentuate the premium feel. The Dark Flame logo is displayed in subtle areas, like on the cup holders, seatbacks, and illuminated side sills.
This special edition is loaded with advanced features, including a four-zone climate control system, heated and ventilated seats, a curved digital cockpit display, and a Harman Kardon sound system. The Dark Flame logo is also prominently displayed, enhancing the exclusive feel of the interior.
Under the hood, the Dark Flame Edition is based on the xDrive40Li variant, equipped with a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder mild-hybrid engine. This engine delivers 375 horsepower and 520 Nm of torque, powering all four wheels through an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. It also includes dual-axle air suspension, an M Sport exhaust, and M Sport brakes for improved performance.
Priced at 830,000 yuan ($116,500), the Dark Flame Limited Edition is capped at 1,000 units for production. This price point places it 101,000 yuan ($14,200) above the M Sport Package variant and 30,000 yuan ($4,200) more than the Night Edition with a similar engine and transmission setup. With its exclusive design, upscale features, and limited availability, the Dark Flame Limited Edition offers a premium and unique choice for BMW enthusiasts in China.
