Changan's Entry Into The Electric Pickup Truck Market With Hunter

Author: |

Changan has officially introduced its Hunter pickup truck, marking a significant milestone in the automotive industry. Originally unveiled at last year's Guangzhou Auto Show, Changan proudly declares the Hunter as the world's first extended range electric vehicle (EREV) pickup truck. Offering consumers a wide range of options, there are a total of 8 versions available, with prices ranging from 139,900 yuan to 216,900 yuan.

The Hunter is offered in both standard and extended length variants, with the latter commanding an additional 1,000 yuan. The standard iteration measures 5380×1930×1885 mm in length, width, and height respectively, with a wheelbase of 3180 mm. Opting for the extended version grants more cargo space, resulting in overall dimensions of 5630×1930×1885 mm and a lengthened wheelbase of 3430 mm.

In practical terms, the standard model accommodates a bed measuring 1600×1595×500 mm, while the extended variant offers a larger bed at 1850×1595×500 mm. Notably, the tailgate features a convenient drop-down step positioned 530 mm above the ground, with the bay itself situated 830 mm off the ground. The sides of the passenger compartment are equipped with running boards, and for added utility, a manual roller shutter is available for the cargo bay.

Powering the Hunter are single motor versions equipped with a 176 hp unit on the rear axle, while four-wheel-drive versions incorporate a supplementary 96 hp electric motor on the front axle. All variants utilize a common 31.18 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack, providing a pure electric range of 180 km under CLTC conditions and a combined range of 1,031 km – notably, the quoted range remains consistent for both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel-drive configurations.

Acting as a range extender, the Hunter employs the JL486ZQ6 engine, a 2.0T unit capable of delivering up to 190 hp power. However, as a series hybrid, the engine exclusively functions as an electricity generator. Noteworthy off-road capabilities are facilitated by an angle of approach of up to 29° and an angle of departure of up to 27°, complemented by a fairly high ground clearance.

Externally, the Hunter presents itself as a conventional dual-cab vehicle with minimal distinguishing features, safeguarded by thick cladding surrounding its lower section. Additionally, the load bed is fortified with anti-scratch and corrosion-resistant materials. Notably, an electrical discharge unit integrated into the bed provides up to 3.3 kW of power, enhancing utility. However, despite these strengths, the truck's load capacity remains relatively low at 495 kg.

Internally, the Hunter boasts modern amenities, featuring a seamlessly integrated dual-screen unit comprising a 7.5-inch instrument cluster and a 12-inch infotainment display. Model-specific features include cruise control, AutoNavi map navigation, turn assist lights, automatic wipers, voice control, OTA upgrade capability, leather steering wheel, LCD instrument panel, 40W wireless phone charging, leather seats, seat heating, 4/6 speakers, air conditioning, rear air vents, and more.
