Chevrolet Onix Gets Smarter and Sharper for 2026

Affordable cars are a common sight in emerging markets, but Chevrolet has adopted a unique strategy in South America and China with the Onix hatchback and its sedan sibling, the Onix Plus. Positioned just below the Trax crossover in Chevrolet’s lineup, these compact vehicles have recently undergone a mid-cycle refresh for the 2026 model year. This update enhances their visual appeal and adds a suite of modern technologies, aiming to keep them competitive in their increasingly crowded segment.

First launched in 2019, the current-generation Onix and Onix Plus had begun to feel dated, especially as rival models like the Volkswagen Polo and Fiat Argo raised the bar. Chevrolet’s response comes in the form of subtle but impactful design changes. The vehicles maintain their recognizable profiles, but now feature a more dynamic front bumper design, sportier grille inserts, and reworked lower air intakes. The headlights have also been updated and now include revised internal graphics. In higher trim levels, the lighting system has been upgraded to full-LED units, which are reportedly 61% brighter than before. Chevrolet emphasizes that these changes are not just for aesthetics—the redesigned front bumper improves clearance for driving over ditches and ramps.

At the rear, the changes are more understated. The hatchback variant receives translucent taillights and a more pronounced rear diffuser. For those seeking a more aggressive look, the RS trim continues to be the sportiest version of the Onix hatchback, featuring blacked-out trim pieces, 16-inch black alloy wheels, and a rear spoiler. In addition, Chevrolet plans to commemorate its 100th anniversary in Brazil by launching a special edition model that will include darker design elements, offering buyers a fresh and distinctive aesthetic.

Inside the cabin, the 2026 Onix models benefit from significant tech enhancements. A new digital cockpit setup integrates an 8-inch digital instrument cluster with an 11-inch touchscreen infotainment system, creating a seamless and high-tech user experience. Standard features now include six airbags, built-in Wi-Fi, and keyless entry. Premium variants offer even more, such as wireless phone charging, automatic climate control, and a self-parking assist system.

In terms of performance, both the Onix and Onix Plus retain their 1.0-liter three-cylinder flex-fuel engine, available in two configurations. The naturally aspirated version produces 80 horsepower on gasoline or 82 hp on ethanol. The turbocharged version raises output to 116 hp with gasoline and 121 hp with ethanol. Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission, with power sent exclusively to the front wheels.

The updated models are already available for purchase in Brazil. The starting price for the refreshed hatchback begins at around $18,500, while the Onix Plus sedan starts at R$ 136,490, or approximately $24,400. Fully optioned turbocharged versions with automatic transmissions top out at about $19,100, offering strong value for customers looking for a tech-rich, fuel-efficient compact car.
