The Beijing based brand and the German company have announced that they will co-operate in order to build Mercedes-Benz trucks in China, for the strong market of the Asian country. According to the joint venture, Beijing Foton Daimler Automotive Co., Ltd. (BFDA), will design and build heavy-duty vehicles such as tractor models ‘in China, for China.
The products will be suitable for the Chinese market and its customers’ needs. These trucks will be equipped with Daimler Truck technologies and the production won’t start for the next two years.
The production will take place in a new truck plant, which is located in Huairou, Beijing and belongs to BFDA. According to this German-Chinese contract, over 458 million euros (or 3.8 billion RMB) have been invested in order to take the ownership of the new plant and start to set up infrastructure, as the tractors will be powered by engines from Daimler Trucks universal powertrain unit.
Sven Ennerst, a member of the board of management Daimler Truck AG says,
” By locally producing Mercedes-Benz tractors for the growing advanced truck segment we will introduce our heavy-duty product platform to the Chinese market, adjusting it perfectly to the needs of our Chinese customers.
Gong Yueqiong, CEO of Foton Motor said,
” The inauguration of Beijing Foton Daimler Automotive Co., Ltd. in 2012 marks a historic step made by Foton and Daimler. The current localization project of a Mercedes-Benz heavy-duty truck is an evolution and upgrade of Foton Daimler cooperation and the right strategic move of further developing Chinese market.”
Hubertus Troska, member of the board of management of Daimler AG, responsible for Greater China says,
” We aim to grow in China and with China. That applies to our passenger car as well as our commercial vehicle business.”
