China’s expanding SUV and off-road vehicle market is gaining a powerful new entry with the introduction of the Dongfeng Warrior M817, a plug-in hybrid 4×4 designed to make a bold statement. With a combined output exceeding 700 horsepower, this rugged vehicle aims to outperform many of its rivals, positioning itself as one of the most formidable new options in the segment. While Dongfeng has not yet confirmed whether the Warrior M817 will be available internationally, speculation suggests that both left-hand drive and right-hand drive versions are being considered—hinting at possible global ambitions.

The Warrior M817 was first shown in concept form during the Shanghai Auto Show in April, but the latest images reveal the final production-ready model. This new SUV is part of Dongfeng’s M-Hero series, which launched last year with the more extreme M-Hero 917, a fully electric SUV that boasts over 1,000 horsepower. Although the M817 adopts a slightly more restrained design language compared to its sibling, it still exudes aggressive, off-road-ready styling and strong road presence.

Two trim levels of the M817 have been revealed so far—one in silver representing the base version, and the other in black, showcasing the flagship variant. The front fascia of the base model features a more open grille with M-Hero branding, while the top-end version uses a faux gloss-black grille for a sleeker, more upscale look. The SUV features sharp lines, angular bodywork, and LED taillights, giving it a distinctly modern yet muscular appearance. The bumper, hood, and various exterior elements all emphasize a tough, purposeful design.

Off-road capability appears to be a strong focus for the Warrior M817. Both models feature pronounced wheel arch flares, high ground clearance, and side steps, although exact clearance figures have not been released. The SUV also includes two different roof rail designs, providing some customization options. At the rear, the base version carries a spare wheel, while the flagship model features a large external storage box. The taillights resemble those of the M-Hero 917, offering visual continuity across the series.

According to Car News China, the Warrior M817 measures 5,100 mm in length, 1,998 mm in width, and has a height of 1,899 mm with standard suspension, which increases slightly to 1,919 mm with air suspension. It rides on a 3,005 mm wheelbase, and offers 30-degree approach and departure angles, indicating serious off-road capability. The plug-in hybrid system consists of a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors, collectively generating 700 horsepower. While this is lower than the 1,073 hp produced by the all-electric M-Hero 917, it is still an impressive output for a hybrid off-roader.

The official debut of the Dongfeng Warrior M817 is scheduled to take place at the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Auto Show this weekend, where more technical details and market plans are expected to be revealed. This launch marks another step in China’s fast-paced development of high-performance hybrid and electric SUVs.
