Ford Recalls Mustangs for Software Issue

Author: |

Ford is issuing a recall for a select number of 2022-2023 Mustang vehicles due to a potential error in a previous recall repair. The issue stems from the improper installation of software during the initial recall, which addressed a potential problem with the power steering control module (PSCM).

The original recall, affecting 30,735 Mustangs, was initiated last year because their steering gears might not have been properly calibrated. This could lead to oscillations in the steering wheel when the driver attempted to turn, as these Mustangs utilize electronic steering systems. The initial problem involved the secondary digital torque sensor in the steering gear having an inverted polarity. While vehicles were recorded as being fixed, some did not receive the correct software update to rectify this underlying issue. Without the correct software, the original problem could resurface if the primary steering torque sensor were to fail or malfunction.

The potential consequence of this unaddressed issue is a safety concern. Ford states in the recall report that "unintended steering assist could lead to loss of vehicle control while driving, increasing the risk of a crash." While the severity of the oscillations is not specified, the possibility of losing control of the vehicle poses a significant safety hazard.

To remedy this, Ford is instructing owners of the affected Mustangs to bring their vehicles to a Ford dealership. Service technicians will then update the PSCM with the correct software, free of charge to the vehicle owner. Ford plans to begin notifying affected owners on March 31st. The automaker reports that it is currently unaware of any accidents or injuries that have occurred as a direct result of this issue.

This recall adds to Ford's recent history of recall events. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Ford has already issued 10 recalls this year. The automaker has been working to address quality issues, with CEO Jim Farley publicly stating his commitment to improving the company's quality control processes. Last year, Ford was the third-most recalled automotive brand, issuing 67 recalls affecting 4.8 million vehicles, trailing only Tesla and Stellantis. The frequency and scale of these recalls have resulted in substantial expenses for the company.
