Ford is gearing up to introduce refreshed iterations of its midsize SUVs, the Equator and Equator Sport, designed specifically for the Chinese market. These models, which debuted three years ago, are undergoing a makeover with updated styling and the introduction of a new plug-in hybrid configuration. Manufactured in China through the JMC-Ford joint venture, the 2025 Ford Equator and Equator Sport are poised for an official unveiling, but early access to photos and specifications has been granted, courtesy of China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Both SUVs showcase redesigned fronts, enhancing their visual appeal and differentiation. The Equator boasts a smaller grille, sleek LED headlights, and simplified bumper intakes, while the Equator Sport presents a more sculpted nose with a dark-finished area adorned by a honeycomb pattern. At the rear, the Equator features new full-width LED taillights, while the Equator Sport retains the outgoing model's design, albeit with a revised diffuser.

While their profiles remain largely unchanged, Ford designers have introduced new options for alloy wheels, with the Equator Sport featuring muscular rear fenders reminiscent of the iconic Mustang. In terms of dimensions, the facelifted Equator Sport extends by 55 mm, measuring 4,685 mm in length, while the larger Equator grows by 15 mm, reaching 4,920 mm.

Interior updates remain undisclosed, leaving uncertainty regarding whether the models will retain the dual 12.3-inch screens of their predecessors or opt for the flashier 27-inch infotainment system found in other Ford models.

Beyond visual enhancements, the significant development for Chinese consumers lies in the introduction of a new plug-in hybrid powertrain for both models. This configuration pairs a 1.5-liter engine generating 148 hp with an electric motor contributing an additional 81 hp, resulting in a combined output of 215 hp. Energy storage is facilitated by a lithium iron phosphate battery pack manufactured by CATL. However, specific details regarding battery capacity and zero-emission range are yet to be disclosed.

The Equator Sport will continue to be available with the ICE-only turbocharged 1.5-liter EcoBoost gasoline engine from the outgoing model, producing 168 hp and 260 Nm of torque. Although the previous 2.0-liter EcoBoost powertrain for the larger Ford Equator is not mentioned in the spec sheets, it could potentially be added later.

Further details regarding the facelifted Ford Equator and Equator Sport are anticipated to surface closer to their market launch in China, slated for later in 2024.
